Stillwater sure knows how to take advantage of the picturesque surroundings of their city when they put on a music festival. After the highly enjoyable Rock The Vine event held at Saint Croix Vineyards earlier this summer, now Stillwater is set to play host to the 10th Anniversary of the Square Lake Film & Music Festival in August, with festivities taking place a stones-throw away from the scenic setting of Square Lake County Park.
In addition to a batch of films being screened by emerging filmmakers, the Square Lake Film & Music Festival also boasts a stellar lineup of Minnesota musicians, led by Retribution Gospel Choir (pictured above) and a lot more.
The rest of the music includes Night Moves, the Pines, Food Pyramid, Father You See Queen, Spider John Koerner, KBDS, and a special score by International Novelty Gameplan which will accompany a film screening.
At 10 a.m. on August 11, a contingent of festival-goers will depart on bikes from HUB bike COOP and Cycles For Change (formerly the Sibley Bike Depot). Parking is extremely limited, so guests are encouraged to carpool or find alternate transportation to the event. Gates open at 2:15 that afternoon, and the films and music will continue straight through until midnight.
The event has sold out in advance in previous years, so everyone is encouraged to get tickets well ahead of time. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own food and beverages, re-usable water bottles, blankets, and camping gear, leaving your dogs and frowns at home. A limited amount of free on-site camping is available on a first come, first served basis.

The event has the makings of a truly special event for both film and music lovers, all set with Square Lake (one of the cleanest lakes in all of Minnesota) as the backdrop. So be sure to get your tickets quickly, as advanced online tickets are currently available for $20, with biker discount tickets for $5. Tickets at the gate will be $30, but again, the intimate event typically sells out, so don't count on tickets being available the day of the festival.
Here is the current lineup for the 2012 Square Lake Film & Music Festival:
