96.3 NOW shifts to adult top 40 station K-TWIN

Long-time Twin Cities radio listeners haven't been able to surf the FM dial for the past 20 years without stumbling upon the loquacious pop jock Tony Fly. Now he's looking for a new home on the airwaves.

Fly was laid off from his job as 96.3 FM K-TWIN morning host and Assistant Program Director after 11 years as a Northern Lights Broadcasting employee. Up until late 2009, the station was the urban-formatted B96, and Fly hosted mornings there too.

"I guess I'm doing good," Fly tells Gimme Noise. "It happens. It hadn't happened to me in 20 years, but I guess it happens. I was given the standard 'we're moving in a different direction' thing."

"The ratings weren't moving and they had to make some changes," he says. "These are just my assumptions. What I got out of them is that they're making changes and moving in a new direction in the morning. What I read into that is that the whole radio station's ratings aren't moving and they needed to start doing something."

Back in May, MinnPost's David Brauer reported that during March "the station had to a 1.7 percent share of the total Twin Cities audience, down from a 4.1 a year earlier."

"I loved working with [Erik Perkins] and [Dan Edwards] on K-TWIN," Fly emphasizes. "It was a lot of fun, and I wish them nothing but the best."

Previous to his time working for Northern Lights, Fly spent nine years as an evening host for  101.3 FM KDWB between 1992 to 2001. Remember the Top 8 at 8?

"I'm looking for every opportunity here in the Twin Cities," Fly adds. "My family's here and I don't want to leave. On to the next one, I guess. I suggest that everyone call their favorite radio and television station and tell them to hire me."

Ya know....I just thought about this on my drive home tonight - I can like a movie that somebody else dislikes and vice versa. Same goes with music, same goes with anything - it's subjective. I just realized what the real argument is in all said cases: YES, the arts are subjective and we all have our opinion and a right to it. The problem, however, is that as sure as the sun sets in the west, our society is becoming so stupid that subjectivity is right out the window. Dumb people don't have objective opinions - flashy, splashy, quick and auto-tuned and they are content...because they have no thought process. Intelligent people (the endangered species) think about what makes a song, a movie, a performance and they care whether or not quality, blood, sweat and tears were put into a song or a film or what have you, and they base their judgement of said item on these things. How does this item rate on a scale of what matters? Junk is junk. Period. There is no getting around it. I don't care if it has a catchy beat or whatever, if it was programmed shit with the same synthesized back beat as every other top 40s song, and auto-tuned voices -- it is junk. It is not quality, it is not for art - it is for money, plain and simple. These industries rely on growing stupidity and lack of ability to delineate quality from non-quality to sell their crappy, easily produced product. It makes me sick that they do this, but it makes me more sick that our American society is SO fucking stupid, that this trick works. Works like a charm.

Way too many people are defending this sh*t. The idiotic masses have spoken. KDWB forever! BE-YAAAA!

You have shown your age, sir. What you speak of was almost 100 years ago today.

Yeah, I remember Top 8 at Eight when KDWB actually still played music. Y'know, the days where each song was different & not autotuned and digitally enhanced. When KDWB played Guns N' Roses & Faith No More, when winning things from KDWB meant a trip to London or the VMA's - now you're lucky to win a shirt if you can even pick out the song needed to win since everything sounds the same on KDWB.

Leticia Moreno: Oh...sorry for the negative comments. I guess only those who like something should have a voice or an opinion. That opinion being one of liking said something. Got it. My bad.

Couldn't have happened to a bigger dousche bag. Now for the rest of those crappy so called d-jays at these pathetic top twenty, no talent auto-tone music (for lack of a better thing to call it at this moment) stations, can their asses as well.

Jean Hehn: That's the problem - he should have talked to his listeners like they were totally stupid, because they were.

Skarlett Gabriela: Anything 105, except for REV is SHIT105.

I'm surprised they thought he was the problem instead of erik perkins, who has the exact opposite of a voice (or personality) for radio. He's the reason I can't listen to that morning show.

Tony was one of the only ones I would listen to! He grew up with us and we followed him as he grew too. He is funny, informative and never talked to his listeners like they were totally stupid. (unlike the other idiot station and their staged 'wars' and pranks.) Tony is an entertainer and will move onto a better chapter of his life.
