Bob Dylan releases "Duquesne Whistle" video, plans unique promotion for Tempest
And now, the video for "Duquesne Whistle" has just been released, providing striking visuals to accompany the jaunty first song from Dylan's 35th studio album. The clip is directed by Nash Edgerton, who also directed the video for "Beyond Here Lies Nothing," from Dylan's 2009 album, Together Through Life.
The video features Dylan and an eclectic, rag-tag crew (including what appears to be a Gene Simmons impersonator) strolling through the city streets with a distinct purpose, with Bob coming across as an O.G. ringleader in the process. A somewhat violent, guy-tries-to-get-girl storyline plays out around him, but in the end that sad, cautionary tale simply fades into the urban backdrop as Dylan strolls on by.
As for the song itself, "Duquesne Whistle" begins with a bouncy but restrained intro, before giving way to the swinging, relaxed blues that have been the predominant focus on Dylan's records as of late. It finds Dylan singing wistfully about a train whistle that seems to be calling to him even now.
He also sings poignantly, "You're the only thing alive that keeps me going," giving a nod to an unnamed muse who thankfully still gives the 71-year-old maestro something to wake up for in the morning. But the somewhat ambiguous song doesn't quite say if Dylan is getting on that train pulling out of the station, or if that love of his is leaving him once and for all.
In addition to the standard promotion for the record, Sony Music is also trying some inventive, original forms of marketing for Tempest in advance of its September 11 release date. Beginning on Friday, August 31, visitors to listentobobdylan.com will find a map of U.S. locations (and nine worldwide countries) where selected songs from Dylan's new album will be streamed directly to mobile devices. The tracks will only be available for streaming when fans are within the Tempest-tagged geographic areas utilizing the free Sound Graffiti app which can be downloaded directly from the listentobobdylan site.
On Monday, September 10, the day before the release of the new album, Tempest-themed pop-up stores will open for a week-long run in New York, Los Angeles, and London. Fans will be able to purchase the new record a full day in advance at these stores, as well as other Dylan releases and exclusive merchandise, including limited quantities of CDs hand-signed by Bob Dylan himself.
For those of you in those areas (or dedicated fans here in Minnesota who want to travel and take part in the fun), here are the addresses for the Tempest pop-up stores:
* 819 Washington Street, New York, NY 10014
* 7763 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90046
