As Record Store Day continues to gain momentum across the country, the cause is looking for new ways to expand their magnanimous efforts to get people to support local record shops during the rest of the year. One way to do that is to take back part of Black Friday for the brick and mortar record stores while steering music lovers away from big box retailers.

And this Black Friday, plenty of record stores in the area have something special planned, in addition to big sales as well as carrying the exclusive Record Store Day releases that are only available this Friday. So, instead of taking your well-earned money to a large retailer, why not do some browsing at a local record shop and buy some new music that will help you get you through the chaotic rush of this holiday season.

The Electric Fetus in Minneapolis is having what should be a soulful and smooth Black Friday with a live set from the Twin Cities Funk & Soul All-Stars featuring the Prophets of Peace. This is the same crew that entertained a sold-out Cedar Cultural Center back in September, so seeing them at the Fetus should be a real treat. In addition to what is sure to be a swinging live performance, there will also be a limited-edition 7-inch from the Prophets of Peace featuring two never before released tracks from the group.

The 7-inch is put out by Secret Stash Records (who are having a Black Friday sale of their own, with some titles discounted 33 1/3 percent), the good folks behind the wildly popular compilation, Twin Cities Funk & Soul: Lost Grooves from Minneapolis/St. Paul 1964-1979, and this new 45 lets fans dig deeper into the Twin Cities sound of that era. The 7-inch contains the Prophets Of Peace's theme song, "P.O.P." on the A-side, while the B-side features an instrumental jam, "46th Street Bump Time." The record is adorned with the band's Maxx Records logo, and appears exactly as it would have back in the '70s.

The Twin Cities Funk & Soul All-Stars featuring the Prophets Of Peace will be performing at the Minneapolis branch of the Electric Fetus at 2 p.m. this Friday, with the performance being 100% free and sure to be 100% fun.

The Electric Fetus is also hosting a special in-store performance by renowned local bluesman Paul Metsa, to celebrate his new release, Blues, Ballads & Broadsides, on Saturday, November 24 at 2 p.m. This performance is also free.

On top of those two stellar live performances, the Electric Fetus will also be having their annual Black Friday Sale, with 20% off most items store wide. The sale runs both Friday and Saturday, so be sure to take advantage of the savings while you stock up on new music.

Hymie's Vintage Records also has something special cooked up for the Black Friday weekend. In addition to having a fantastic sale of 15% off the entire store on both Friday and Saturday, on Sunday the Bloomington, Indiana quartet Murder By Death will be stopping by for a special in-store performance at 3 p.m.

The group is opening both First Avenue shows by the Hold Steady over the weekend, but on Sunday you get a rare chance to see and hear the talented group perform within the intimate confines of Hymie's Records in support of their terrific recent album, Bitter Drink, Bitter Moon. Don't miss it!

Fifth Element also has some big things planned for Black Friday. In addition to having music-related giveaways taking place at the shop throughout the day, and deep discounts on Rhymesayers clothing and music, they are also having a special Twin Cities Artists Door Busters Sale from 9-11 a.m. only, where select albums from local musicians will be on sale for just $4.99.

The also will be celebrating the release of Big Quarters Somos No Joke, and will have limited edition colored vinyl of Hannibal Buress' Animal Furnace (with only 100 copies of the album pressed). All the deals are available both in the store as well as online, so if you can't make it out to the shop, the same fantastic deals are available on-line as well.

Eclipse Records in St. Paul are planning on carrying some of the exclusive Black Friday releases, while also giving away some of the cool postcards that have been crafted by their next door neighbors, Big Table Studio.

Treehouse Records plan on getting a huge supply of the limited-edition Black Friday titles, as well as one big musical surprise that will only be featured at Treehouse. This past Record Store Day, it was a Michael Yonkers exclusive, which featured his 4 '70s albums packaged in a manila envelope. And this year, they promise they will have something just as cool, so be sure to stop by.

As for the exclusive Black Friday releases, here is a comprehensive list of the special titles on offer. But please be aware that not every record shop is going to be carrying these exclusives, while some stores will choose to stock some but not all of the titles listed--and all of these releases are strictly limited, so some titles will surely sell-out quickly. So, if anyone up early on Friday morning wants to score me an extra copy of the 20th Anniversary Edition of Incesticide or the Leonard Cohen/Jeff Buckley Hallelujah split 7-inch, I promise my eternal gratitude.

This Black Friday (and every day, actually), please remember to support your neighborhood record stores, and shop local, folks!
