Madonna's St. Paul show "REALLY REALLY SUCKED," says reader

"What did you expect, Carol?"

From time to time, we get letters. And then sometimes we get really colorful, impassioned letters. This is one of them.

Our reader Carol flew up to St. Paul from Florida to check one off the bucket list: Madonna in all her live glory -- at long last. This came at considerable expense, with over $2k spent on tickets, her flight, and souvenirs. But was it worth it? As a "lifelong classical, pop and rock lead and backup singer," Carol was roundly disgusted by what she experienced at Madonna's show Saturday at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. (Gimme Noise attended too.) Even after dropping $188 at the bar, she still didn't have a good time.

While Gimme Noise had some reservations about the show, Carol was madder than the Vatican the first time they heard "Like a Prayer." Among her complaints: Madonna didn't sing, Madonna didn't dance, Madonna didn't employ backup singers, Madonna only looks as fabulous as 66-year-old Cher, Madonna is greedy, Madonna's MDNA is "worthless crap," and so forth.

Madonna Review Nov. 3 St. Paul, MN

Review for Mpls Star & Trib tomorrow [Note: Not sure why we received this.]

Madonna SUCKED!

I personally attended the Madonna "spectacle" last Saturday evening, Nov. 3nd, at the EXCEL Center in St. Paul with great anticipation. My "event" tickets were purchased with glee (AND personal savings) last February. I flew from my home in Orlando, FL to MN especially to attend the event with my best friend.

It SUCKED! It REALLY REALLY SUCKED! (I'd use harsher language but choose to take the high road and not reveal the total extent of my rage and outrage in the event children are present).

I rate the event as the #1 worst "performance" I have ever attended in my entire life (I'm about Madonna's age, so I've attended my fair share). To use the term "concert" in this context would be a compliment I am unwilling to extend.

As a lifelong classical, pop and rock lead and backup singer I have always considered it my job to sing. Saturday evening Madonna didn't, not a single note! Additionally, throughout my career, I have often been required to dance, she didn't do that either, not a single kick! She walked up and down the stage quite a few times and even performed a pose or two (nothing I'd call a Vogue). Madonna even performed some basic clever physical tricks including some impressive lifts by her dancers (who did all the heavy lifting)!

"Nothing I'd call a Vogue."

In her defense, Madonna did put on one kick ass amazing pre-recorded display of contemporary audio visual technology with a few live laser thrills sprinkled in.

Her dancers remain exquisite, 2nd to none, proficient in every possible style. They are captivating, beautiful and her only redeeming quality. I hope she pays them very well, they deserve it! I have only my own intuitive inkling this is not the case. I suspect Madonna is cheap! She no longer employs backup singers (why waste the money)??

Madonna looks FABULOUS, but so does Cher (who turned 66 May 20, 2012)!

After racking my singer's brain the entire following day & night, I can only come up with one possible explanation for this travesty disguised as a concert: GREED! Yup, one of the famed 7 deadly sins. Madonna, don't you have enough money to retire?

ummm..... excuse me... i was at that concert that same day in the golden triangle and that was the best by far concert i have ever been too. I also won golden triangle tickets for Sunday's show and went to that it was amazing there is NO other concert that could ever top this exprierence that i've had at the Madonna concert. It was amazing... So Carol maybe you spent to much at the bar and got a little to drunk that you just couldn't enjoy yourself, maybe you should learn to slow it down and enjoy everything in life and obviously you wanted to come to this concert for a reason so you can't sit there and diss Madonna like you did with the show she put on. It ROCKED!!!!! Saturday was my first Madonna concert ever and nothing can ever top that experience it was awesome. So how about I give you 50 cents and you can call someone who cares what you think. This was a never forgetable concert and it was your fault for spending so much money for something you thinked sucked..... I was front row and I saw her singing the 99% of the time so you must have had shitty seats, and definatly can tell you you must have had plenty to drink becuase your bar tab should't have been that high unless you got shit faced before the show.... which means you really didn't wanna see Madonna after all........... In case..... anyone who has been a Madonna fan and hasen't seen her in MN in 25 years isn't gonna be all drunk seeing her concert.... they wanna enjoy the moment and make it a memory in which case you didn't. So in another case your the one who sucked becasue you didnt' enjoy the concert and you have no one to blame but yourself so stop trying to make everyone else feel sorry for you because you spent all that money to come here you had the desicion to come her and you chose it so you have no one to blame but yourself so stop with the MDNA Tour concert at the Xcel Center really really sucked No one cares so grow up cut your losses and next time just dont go see her if thats how u feel.

Yo Carol. Speaking from someone who spent as much as you did and DID sit in VIP and graduated up to the front row, Madonna was singing. I'd go so far as to say, she sang the majority of the show. My question to you is, if you were willing to spend as much as you did, what did you expect? I can only assume that you are a true blue (no pun intended) Madonna fan to shell out that much. Therefore, you should know that she does lipsync during high energy dance numbers... of which there were many that Madonna, herself, performed in front of her dancers. And... sorry to say, there were two female backup singers, too.

So, maybe the obstructed view from your $700 NON-VIP SEAT prohibited you from seeing that. (Again, I can only assume that you got horrendous tickets at an over-inflated price if you paid that much for non-VIP.) Or maybe it was the massive amounts of $26 cocktails (which don't exist by the way; I also have my receipts) that you consumed that soured your evening.

Or maybe you're just delusional. If you're looking for perfect vocals, go see Celine Dion. If you're looking for spectacular dancing, go to the New York City Ballet. If you want an incredibly high-tech, high energy spectacle from one of the most successful female recording artists in history, you should've been in the right place. I admit, she has her flaws, but Madonna's not new; she's been on the scene for over 25 years. Get with it.

I went to the show in Texas...Madonna danced her ass off!  My gosh, I often wondered if this woman ever got tired, on this long world tour.  She sang most if not all songs, "Masterpiece" she sang so emotionally.  So either the person who wrote this article went when Madonna decided NOT to enjoy herself and suspend all dancing and singing.  Or the person who wrote this article is lying (insulting the reader in that process), negatively criticizing Madonna, to get attention (which has worked for many ignorant folks).  The latter sounds much more plausible, I think.

Dear Carol,

Live it, Give it, LOVE! In response to your letter I felt you were making a statement in hopes of getting support, and possiblly some personal growth from such an experience. Here's what I'd like to share back as a loyal and devoted fan, always.

Instead of comparing her and complaining about what you thought she should do or be why not just Let it will be and project gratitiude into the universe. Since she obviously inspired you throughout your life enought to get you to St. Paul and do whatever it took to see her on this tour. I have been a fan of hers since I was in 3rd grade, seeing her live at excel for Like a Virgin Tour. I am 36 years old and I danced the whole time at the MDNA show not once sitting down!

I danced so hard and gave her back the same energy she has given to me.

I also believe that your projection is what you got to enjoy so maybe start there with yourself if you want to call anyone out on why you didn't have a good time. I also didnt have a bar tab becasue I wanted to remember the time in all it's glory!

"Some girls shoot there mouth talk of scenes crying in the limosine" dont want to be like some girls do you??

Love, Jenelle

Face it, some people just don't like the new stuff.

Pop has been hit especially hard in probably the past 20 years, too many "performances" less talent actually on display.

Then throw in the change of musical direction, performers will lose older fans.

I think the first time I really saw this on a large scale was the U2 Zoo TV tour.

While we are on the topic of asking for refunds, how about one for Smashing Pumpkins? No bar tab though....perhaps that was the problem?

I'm sure someone is falling all over themselves to get that check to her.

I personally find madonna to be a total has been hag. Way beyond over her, but entertainment is a personal opinion. I heard the show was great! This is her own problem she spent WAY too much for it and didn't enjoy herself there is no garuntee you will be satisfied.

What did she expect you can't go back in time and think things will be the same

She has been doing this her entire career. Probably a good thing because Madonna has never been know for her vocal prowess.

If she has a $188 tab, I'm pretty sure she's not getting a refund.

What did she expect?! Its a Madonna show.

Who the hell is this woman? Angry or jealous of Madonna's success is my only reasoning, because what she describes isn't the show I saw.
