Twin Cities New Year's Eve live music guide to good decisions
Ah, New Year's Eve. The biggest party night of the year -- and arguably the biggest headache. So many spots, so little time. Planning your NYE is on the same level as devising a tactical strategy for tax evasion or creating a really sick Halloween costume. How can you guarantee you won't end up in some douchey club with a $50 door price or, worse, falling asleep on your couch with your cat in front of the TV just before midnight?
Thankfully, we've selected a few New Year's Eve events that don't suck, compiled here for your convenience. The West Bank promises a rollicking good time, Mark Mallman will be lighting up the Entry, and we've even got Bret Michaels in town. Bret Michaels!

Mark Mallman's 9th Annual New Year's Eve Party
@ First Avenue and 7th Street Entry
Who better to fully encapsulate the madness of New Year's Eve than Minneapolis' own original madman? Mark Mallman takes over the Entry on December 31, accompanied by local favorites Bloodnstuff, Bomba de Luz and Umami. This is Mallman's 9th annual New Year's bash, and in the almost-decade he's been giving us riots, we have yet to be disappointed. At his NYE party last year, Mallman reinvented himself on stage by debuting the "Keyborg." We can only imagine how he'll be topping that this time around. Bonus: Mallman is doing a double-feature this evening, so you can catch the early, all-ages show and then head next door to the Mainroom to dance the night away at Get Cryphy.
Early show at 5 p.m. with Bloodnstuff and Bomba de Luz, All Ages, $12; late show at 9 p.m. with Bloodnstuff and Umami, 18+, $12.
New Year's Eve with Big Head Todd & The Monsters
@ Mill City Nights
It's been quite a year for new venue Mill City Nights, and new fans and supporters will have the opportunity to show their love with the first of what we hope will be many NYE celebrations. On December 31, Mill City Nights welcomes Big Head Todd & The Monsters for a very special performance. If there's any band to light up the stage and give fans a true searing-guitar show, it's this one.
8 p.m., 18+, $60-$125. All tickets include a champagne toast at midnight.
New Year's Eve Party - The World Is Yours!
@ Aria at the Jeune Lune
If you want to swank it up this New Year's and still surround yourself with good music and beautiful people, Aria has the party for you. The World Is Yours! NYE party is an ode to the classic Al Pacino film Scarface, and as such, you should be prepared for a little Miami heat. Live entertainment from Villa Rosa (Muja Messiah and Maria Isa) will be keeping the night enticing with Latin and hip-hop grooves.
9 p.m. Presale tickets are $50 and can be purchased here; day-of price is $75. VIP tickets are $100. All tickets include hors d'oeuvres and coffee.
Hipshaker with Hotpants
@ Kitty Cat Klub
Maybe you just wanna dance the night away. If that's your story, dust off your glitter stilettos and look no further than the monthly dance party happening at Dinkytown's Kitty Cat Klub. The old soul and funk fusion is a surefire guarantee that bodies will be shaking, sweating, and getting down -- and the eclectic garage sale-charm of the KCK's nooks and crannies means that if you need a break (or just, you know, a quiet moment), you'll have that, too.
9 p.m., 21+, $10.
Bret Michaels New Year's Eve 2013
@ Treasure Island Resort & Casino
Whatever, don't pretend like this isn't the best idea ever. It's Bret Michaels. This night will be awesomely entertaining for various reasons, some of which are too obvious to mention. The lead singer of Poison and one of the key figures in the '80s hair metal scene will be rocking the stage with what we can only expect will be a fury of glorious glam tunes. And then, after the show, you're magically still at a casino! This could be the best night ever.
8 p.m., 18+, $110-$135.
Dillinger Four, Frozen Teens, L'Assasins, Girl Group Cover Band, Lady Heat Hot Soul Party
@ Turf Club
If you're trapped in St. Paul this New Year's Eve, fret not. The Turf Club is delivering what could be the best whiskey-soaked gem of them all: a five-band lineup with enough variety to make your face melt. You can take your pick from Minneapolis rock with the Dillinger Four to the smooth, sultry grooves of the DJs Lady Heat--really, you can't make a bad decision here.
8 p.m., 21+, $10.
New Year's Eve with Har Mar Superstar and Astronautalis
@ Triple Rock Social Club
Two of the Twin Cities' most handsome homeboys are all set to deliver you from the old year to the new one. Indie-pop darling Har Mar Superstar and Seattle-turned-Minneapolis rapper Astronautalis are taking over the Triple Rock this New Year's Eve, which means that even if you're too drunk to fully grasp the deep talents of these two artists, you'll still be wildly entertained. The Chalice, one of the best breakout groups of 2012, will opening the evening.
8 p.m., 18+, $20. New Year's Eve Show @ Hexagon Put "cover bands" on the list of things that should really start trending in 2013. This New Year's Eve, the Hex is offering a delightful cocktail of cover bands--you'll experience everything from Bruce Springsteen to Mazzy Star. Hike it to the Hexagon to hear sets from Tramps Like Us (Bruce Springsteen jams), Roky Erickson Cover Band, Swamptronica (electronic swamp rock covers), plus a B52s cover band and a Mazzy Star cover band. 9 p.m., 21+, free.
