This week marks a rare opportunity to catch our purple legend in action. The main event everyone is buzzing about is
Prince's three night stay at
The Dakota Jazz Club. If you aren't prepared to drop a good chunk of money this week, there's plenty of other bands to see too.
The Current hosts their 8th Birthday Party on the
First Avenue main stage featuring acts such as
Cloud Cult, Dave Pirner, The 4onthefloor and more. 86-year-old
Tony Bennett, still classing it up, will be making an appearance at the
State Theater Sunday while actor
Christopher Mintz-Plasse plays the
7th Street Entry with his band
The Young Rapscallions.

7th Street Entry
Onuinu is one of the biggest new names on the electronic pop-music front. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, Dorian Duvall -- whose moniker is pronounced "on-you-in-you" -- is a fresh face with
a fresh game. He calls his music "disco-hop," and of all the made-up hyphenated genres he could have picked, it fits pretty well. It's music hipsters from another planet were listening to years before earthbound hipsters were born -- simultaneously familiar and otherworldly. You can pick any number of influences out of the cloud when you listen to Duvall's debut album, Mirror Gazer, from jazz to Michael Jackson -- you'll find that nothing musical is mutually exclusive. And with that kind of open-minded listening, who knows what sonic plateaus you'll reach? --NATALIE GALLAGHER

The Current's 8th Birthday Party feat, The4onthefloor, Twin Cities Funk and Soul All-Stars,Chastity Brown and John Mark Nelson
First Avenue Mainroom
Even if 89.3 the Current spins a few artists like Mumford & Sons and Adele that aren't starved for airplay, it's one of the half- dozen or so noncommercial radio stations keeping American airwaves vital. The station's laudable support of local artists
is on full display for this weekend's two- night stand at First Avenue. Each night aims for maximum demographic-spanning appeal. Friday features fresh-faced folk-pop acts such as John Mark Nelson and Chastity Brown alongside established rockers the 4onthefloor and veteran musicians of the
Twin Cities Funk & Soul All- Stars, who got their start in the 1970s. Saturday includes Picked-to-Click winners the Chalice, surging shoegazers Now, Now, and Dave Pirner
of Soul Asylum alongside arguably the biggest draw of the whole weekend, Cloud Cult. The famously eco-minded pysch-pop group will be playing their first Twin Cities shows since July 2011 and presumably showcasing material from Love, their ninth album, due
out in March. --ROB VAN ALSTYNE
