Lady Gaga's tour rider uncovered

It's no secret that Lady Gaga can be a high-maintenance gal. The woman is a walking MOMA exhibit with her unbelievable wardrobe. While she's not sporting her craziest styles out and about these days, she's still the same old Gaga we know and love.

The latest financial drama between Gaga and her ex-best friend former assistant continues, and after a six-hour deposition this week, Gaga's tour rider was revealed.

Tour riders offer a somewhat skewed look into what artists really want when they're on tour. Sometimes there are ridiculously detailed requests to act as a litmus test for other simpler, more important requirements. Sometimes there are just ridiculous requests. While some of Gaga's wants and needs aren't entirely lavish, there are a few that might raise brows.

At all times, Gaga must have "large fluffy lavendar [sic] towels," along with smaller matching ones and lavender soap. In order to lounge around or kick back after a show, she'll need white leather couches--the regular ones just won't do. Nor will the hotel's usual décor.

In the way of ambiance, she likes "glam rock, black, silver statins drapped [sic] over walls" and "Old Rock Posters from her favorite artists Bowie, Queen, Elton, Billy Joel, Billy Holiday." Gaga surrounds herself with her Little Monsters' love, asking for her favorite fan art to be included in the room, too. And for her last ambiance-related request: "a manquin with puffy pink public [sic] hair." We'll just let you digest that without comment.

Let's not forget, Lady Gaga's a classy lady who just wants some wine and cheese after performing night after night... Specifically, two bottles of good white wine (Chardonnay preferred) and only one bottle of good red wine (a tossup between Shiraz, Grenache, Malbec, and Cabernet).

But hey, the girl still embraces her wild side, because after looking at the rider again, she decided she didn't need a few items (like vanilla Activia), but she did require Jameson.

Here are a few more items from her extensive and detailed list of needs:

  • Pack of long straws (must be extra long)

  • Bag of corn tortilla chips (natural/organic), Tostito lime flavor preferred

  • Jar of organic peanut butter with flax seed and no more than 4g of sugar

  • Ezekial sprouted grain tortillas

  • One box or six small boxes of bran flakes or Special K (no berries or raisins)

Gaga certainly loves her cereal.

The rest of the list can be found at Celebuzz.

I followed the link and read the whole rider.  It's actually quite reasonable.  OK, the mannequin with pink "public" hair is...well, let's be charitable and consider it a joke.  But hey, the girl is pretty Macalester-meets-art school, so whatever, I guess.

You have to remember these people keep ridiculous schedules and live in hotels.  The travel alone is enough to cause most people to lose all connection to reality.  It sounds great, jetting from 5-star hotel to 5-star hotel, but it really becomes a grind fast.  Being in your own place, having your own stuff, your own food in particular, and knowing where your socks are is a big, huge, deal.  Just having your laundry smell like some weird detergent can really throw you off on the road.

Towels are a mainstay of every rider.  They're a big sticking point.  Venues and promoters tend to skimp on the towels, and it's really stupid.  You pay big dollars to get an act in, you sell millions of dollars worth of tickets, the performers sweat their brains out for a couple hours to make you all large bucks, and you throw them some nasty, scratchy, bleached-out rags?  Not Cool.  So performers always ask for lots of nice, fluffy towels.  And when they actually get them, they are really grateful.  If you had to take a shower in different water every day, your skin would freak out.  A decent towel is something close to heaven in those circumstances.

As for the overly-specific food requests, the idea is to be as comfortable as possible, in a dressing room in some place you've never been before.  If you were buying groceries for yourself, you wouldn't buy just any old thing; you'd get what you want and like.  If you had to send a list to strangers on a list of cities, you wouldn't know what you might want to snack on at 11:30 PM Wednesday in 3 months time, so you make a big list of stuff you might want.

These riders make for entertaining reading. The best one ever is the Foo Fighter's rider on Smoking Gun.  The guy who wrote it is a deity in the touring world.  He explains, in a comic style, exactly what they want and why it means enough to them to write it all down.   Well worth seeking out and reading.
