Cam'ron
First Avenue
The quintessential rap playboy, Harlem's Cam'ron helped define the sound and look of mid-2000s hip hop thanks to his massively influential solo work and that of his group the Diplomats a.k.a. Dipset. Casually bragging about his cars, ways with women, and pissing off PETA with his various furs ("Accessories, my closet's Pet Sematary," he touts on the Kanye West-produced hit "Down and Out" off 2004's classic Purple Haze), Cam'ron is a master of cocksure lyricism and undeterred swagger. Though things slowed for Killa Cam after a three-year hiatus from music to help his ailing mother, the recent team-up with Vado for Gunz and Butter promises he's not lost his vigor. Some high-profile guest spots and talk of a new Dipset album are putting Cam's name back in people's minds, but the fact that his lingo, flow patterning, and flamboyant fashion sense are still present in today's rap stars proves he never really left. Cody ChesnuTT
Triple Rock Social Club
Renowned Roots associate and soul-music maestro Cody ChesnuTT released his debut stunner double album, The Headphone Masterpiece, back in 2002, and spent the better part of a decade readying the follow-up. Despite its epic gestation time, Landing on a Hundred feels remarkably fresh and alive, and the passage of time did nothing to shrink the scope of ChesnuTT's always outsized musical ambitions. A throwback to bar-raising soul platters like Marvin Gaye's What's Going On and Curtis Mayfield's Roots, Hundred sees ChesnuTT deftly alternating between uplifiting personal anthems ("Til I Met Thee") and ferociously funky message-oriented material ("Under the Spell of the Handout"). All of the tunes benefit from boisterous brass and sweeping string arrangements, and the 45-year-old ChesnuTT's spine-tingling singing voice is thankfully showing no signs of losing its booming power. --Rob Van Alstyne

Kitty Cat Klub
The first Thursday of every month is Modern Radio Night at the Kitty Cat Klub, and the local label aims to re-create the edgy musical magic of Manchester's fabled club the Hacienda. Two wildly inventive local quartets, Leisure Birds and Flavor Crystals, bring their expansive, pulsing sounds, with between-set and after-show music spun by Radio K's Chase Mathey and TRL. These Modern Radio Nights are always free, and introduce local music fans to unheralded bands that don't get nearly as much enough attention as they deserve.--Erik Thompson
