Up, Up, Up! A Benefit for the Zach Sobiech Fund
Varsity Theater
Zach Sobiech doesn't have a lot of time, so he's using it wisely. In 2009, the 17-year-old singer-songwriter from Lakeland was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone tumor, and the cancer has since spread to his internal organs. The acoustic "Clouds" is a song laying his struggle bare, and it has proven relatable and uplifting to the tune of more than two million YouTube views since December. His story has spread far enough, in fact, that BMI just inked a songwriting deal with him. To mark the release of his second album, Fix Me Up, Sobiech shall perform a rare gig at Varsity Theater with Kevin Bowe & the Okemah Prophets, former The Voice contestant Vicci Martinez, Apollo Cobra, Squares, and more. Proceeds will benefit the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund at Children's Cancer Research Fund. --Reed Fischer

Baauer / Just Blaze
The Loft
Baauer was a figurehead for 2012's trend of weaving Southern gun-clap street-rap production tricks into bass music -- a subgenre dubbed "trap." The Brooklynite's "Harlem Shake" (Mad Decent) was omnipresent in the kinds of circles that preferred ecstasy to vodka mixers as their club intoxicant of choice, and while its strengths were sourced cleanly from the same kinds of snare-rolling, bass-clobber techniques that made Lex Luger a soundsystem-stressing maestro, the authenticity question was never far behind. But if one co-sign can make all the difference, this should be a convincing one: Just Blaze has made showcase beats for some of the most acclaimed and best-selling hip-hop albums of the century, from Jay-Z's The Blueprint ("Girls, Girls, Girls") to Kanye's Late Registration ("Touch the Sky") to Kendrick Lamar's good kid, m.A.A.d city ("Compton"). --Nate Patrin

Big K.R.I.T.
Mississippi rapper Big K.R.I.T. emerged to prominence with mixtapes Return of Forever and Krit Wuz Here. Both married both conscious and Southern rap over smooth and soulful beats he created himself. He's since gone a more commercial route with his latest album, Live from the Underground, and he's a regular guest on others' tracks (see A$AP Rocky's "1 Train"). Through lyrics detailing his shimmy up the rap ladder to his issues with women, money, and family, K.R.I.T. manages to be both "hard" and believably vulnerable. Opening is the forever-high Curren$y. --Jen Boyles

The Residents
Cedar Cultural Center
Take the square root of Sun Ra, multiply by Captain Beefheart cubed, add maybe a dash of Stockhausen, divide by the tangent of Frank Zappa, toss in whatever musical oddities are lurking behind the radiator, and you may start approaching the 40-year-old freak show that is the Residents. Dadaist provocateurs notoriously anonymous (until recently) behind their trademark eyeball-in-a-top-hat, the Residents nurture an utterly uncategorizable sound easily stretching the definition of avant-garde from free jazz to punk rock and far down their tributaries. Currently a trio, the group arrives on its 40th Anniversary Wonder of Weird tour promising nothing short of musical mayhem culled from every obtuse angle of its strange existence. --Rick Mason
