The Postal Service extend tour dates -- St. Paul in August

The decade-old phenomenon that was the Postal Service is coming to the Twin Cities later this year. A little while back, the team of Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (Dntel) announced they'd reform, play some shows, and Give Up would receive a deluxe 10th anniversary reissue in April.

In those ten years, we got Garden State, we got Owl City, we got an onslaught of music blogs, and the "indietastic" conversations that used to happen in record stores are now bouncing around Twitter. Not to say that the Postal Service is directly responsible for any of it -- Adam Young did say he was writing "the next chapter," though -- but they've proven emblematic for a synthesized turn in the tide. Now, the Twin Cities can find out if an act assembled through the mail, that many heard for the first time long after they had disbanded a not very real band, can reconstruct themselves in a new era when the Postal Service hit Roy Wilkins later this year.

Just to show how things have changed in a decade, here's the Funny or Die skit imagining what the auditions that brought Gibbard and Tamborello together would've been like:
A Sub Pop "suit" says they combed MySpace and Friendster to find the ideal talent for the project, and that incluces Aimee Mann, Blink-182's Tom DeLonge, Guns N' Roses' Duff McKagan, Moby, Weird Al Yankovic (with a polka treatement of "We Will Become Silhouettes"), and amazingly Helmet's Page Hamilton (riffing profusely over "Clark Gable"). This skit would never have happened ten years ago!

When they finally come to Gibbard, the exec calls it crap, but Tamborello clearly heard something in it that we're still hearing in so many other acts today -- including the Postal Service. Case in point, the recently released "A Tattered Line of String," the first fresh material since Give Up.

The initial run of shows came out in February, and the August 2 stop at Roy Wilkins Auditorium is, so far, the final concert on the agenda. Pre-sale for the show begins on Wednesday, March 6, and general sales follow on Friday, March 8. Here are the dates:

No Chicago date and Minneapolis on 8/2? Seems like Lollapalooza also awaits.

@solace I know. It is "recently released" and "fresh" to listeners, even if it's an old recording.

@ReedFischer gotcha. guess i thought by "fresh" you meant new. some sites (and The Current) had initially stated it was a new recording, so I wasn't sure, thanks.
