Another busy week in the Twin Cities! Obviously, the biggest event this weekend is Summer Set. Taking up three days, the Somerset Amphitheater will welcome Passion Pit, Girl Talk, Big Boi, STS9 and many more. Saturday is the Pizza Lucé Block Party, which has moved to the the popular pizzeria's downtown location. Valerie June plays the Cedar Cultural Center while Marcia Ball plays the Dakota Jazz Club. Cherie Currie returns to Minneapolis Sunday, while Jack Klatt & the Cat Swingers begin their new residency at the Turf Club Monday.

Tom Rush
Cedar Cultural Center
A pivotal figure of the early-'60s folk revival, Tom Rush emerged on the Boston scene as a fine interpreter of folk and blues nuggets (earning comparisons to our own Koerner, Ray, and Glover) and a distinctive guitarist. As his career progressed, he earned a rep as a champion of undiscovered talent (covering then-unknowns like Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Jackson
Browne), and eventually staging shows (dubbed Club 47) that mixed famous and obscure artists. Rush also ventured into folk-rock and, while not terribly prolific, wrote somememorable, widely covered songs, such as "No Regrets." Last December, Rush, looking uncannily like Mark Twain, played Boston's Symphony Hall with a slew of friends both old (David Bromberg) and new (Dom Flemons). The show, Celebrates 50 Years of Music,
now is out in a CD/DVD set. --RICK MASON

Rodney Crowell
Cedar Cultural Center
This year's headline news for veteran renegade Nashville singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell was the February release of Old Yellow Moon, his wonderful collaboration with Emmylou Harris. A key member of Harris's Hot Band in the 1970s, Crowell intertwines his voice magnificently with the glowing Emmylou, each profoundly expressive, all the more so while harmonizing, or spurring one another to electrifying heights, such as on Kris Kristofferson's harrowing tale of addiction ("Chase the Feeling"), Hank DeVito's hard blues ("Black Caffeine"), or their rollicking new version of Crowell's classic "Bluebird Wine." Opening will be local alt-country singer-songwriter Frankie Lee. --RICK MASON
