Top 10 must-see Minnesota music videos this week
Local Frames is a weekly column spotlighting the best new music videos featuring musicians and directors with Minnesota ties.
This week we kick things off with a brand new video from the burgeoning local duo, Strange Names, who are currently at work finishing up their debut full-length. We're also highlighting new clips from Greg Grease, Lioness, El Le Faunt, ACTN, Killstreak, and Haphduzn and Dimitry Killstorm, which features a guest spot from Slug. There's a dynamic in-studio performance from CHVRCHES taken from their visit to the Current before their recent sold-out show at First Avenue, as well as a sweet City of Music video from Majical Cloudz directed by Dan Huiting. In addition to all of that, the folks at Summer Set have put together a really cool video compiling some of the memorable sights and sounds of their festival. Enjoy!
Strange Names - "Potential Wife"
While the guys in Strange Names are busy writing and recording new material for their highly anticipated debut full-length, the just dropped a fun and fresh new video for the insanely catchy "Potential Wife" to tide us all over. The track is lifted from their self-titled EP, and finds both Liam and Francis -- who shot, edited, and directed the video as well -- playing around with random props while having plenty of fun in the sun, which only adds to the buoyant nature of the track itself.
Greg Grease - "Continuum"
Greg Grease is back with a smooth new video for "Continuum," from his excellent recent EP, Black King Cole. This retro-styliszed clip was directed by Fun Zach, with animation done by David Park, all complimenting the fresh beats and rhymes that Greg is delivering. Grease and DJ Just Nine have a reggae night planned at Honey on September 26th, where the duo, who call themselves SPCE WZRD, will be spinning some dancehall, soul, ska, and hip-hop tracks.
CHVRCHES - "Recover (Live on the Current)"
Glasgow's CHVRCHES are now a perfect two for two in memorable local shows, and before their recent sold-out First Ave gig, the trio dropped by the Current studios to play this stripped-down but still devastating version of "Recover." The focus in this rendition shifts to Lauren Mayberry's pleading, angelic vocals instead of the pulsating beats which drives so much of their music, and this restrained take only magnifies the meaning and sentiment of the song.
Haphduzn & Dimitry Killstorm - "TOFU (Feat. Slug)"
We recently featured the dynamic duo of Haphduzn and Dimitry Killstorm as part of our focus on the Lights and a Backdrop series, and now the pair are back with an official video for "TOFU," and they brought along Slug to help make the track even more banging. The clip is the fourth lifted from the duo's recent record, Whittier Alliance, and finds the guys having some truly disgusting fun in a restaurant kitchen before they find themselves in a much more comfortable environment rocking the stage.
Majical Cloudz - "This Is Magic (City of Music session)"
Back in August when Majical Cloudz were in Minneapolis to play the Entry, the group also took some time out to shoot a City of Music video for their hypnotic track, "This Is Magic." The stark white surroundings only adds to the haunting appeal of the song, with Dan Huiting and his talented crew perfectly capturing the raw emotions of the track by removing all unnecessary distractions and diversions. It's truly a lovely, moving clip.
