As the weather grows cold, the Twin Cities music scene still remains hot! Neko Case makes a two day stop at First Avenue starting Wednesday, and Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin hits up the 7th Street Entry. Justin Vernon's side project Volcano Choir is Friday and a sold out CocoRosie show is at the Cedar Saturday. Meanwhile, Fountains of Wayne co-headlines the First Avenue Mainroom with local legends, Soul Asylum. Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann makes a two-day stop at the Dakota, starting Sunday and psych rockers Thee Oh Sees will be at the Amsterdam Monday.

Neko Case

First Avenue, Wednesday 10.16 & Thursday 10.17

Now 16 years removed from her solo debut, alt-country icon Neko Case is still in her prime. Her verbosely titled new album, The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You, pays homage to classic country sounds in austere acoustic gems like "I'm From Nowhere." Case also perfects the sophisticated power-pop formula she's long dabbled in with the New Pornographers on fuller bodied tunes like "Man." Overall, the album finds Case's songwriting and booming, beautiful twang both at the top of their game. With Dead Man Winter. --Rob Van Alstyne

Volcano Choir
First Avenue

Content to leave the Bon Iver behemoth on ice for the foreseeable future, Best New Artist Grammy winner Justin Vernon has of late turned his focus to two side projects. While his dirty boogie blues-rock trio the Shouting Matches bears little resemblance to the sounds that made him famous, there's more of Bon Iver's fragile beauty coursing through the veins of Repave, the sophomore album from Volcano Choir, his sextet side-band. While VC's debut was a hook-less largely instrumental musical journey, Repave retains the gentle spirit and exploratory bent of its predecessor and moves it in a far more immediately melodic direction.
