Still don't have plans for Halloween? Have no fear! There's plenty of shows to catch this night of fright. First Avenue will be holding their annual Halloween party and costume contest while the Solid Gold hosts the night at the Turf Club. As for post-Halloween partying, Okkervil River plays the First Avenue Mainroom and My Bloody Valentine makes an appearance at the Roy Wilkins.

Chris Cornell
O'Shaughnessy Auditorium
Armed only with an acoustic guitar and his rough-textured, blues-tinged voice, Chris Cornell is likely to attract as much acclaim on his second solo Songbook tour as he did for the 2011 installment. Among rock's signature instruments, Cornell's voice, along with surprisingly deep lyrics, is the focus of a career that's included grunge pioneers Soundgarden, Audioslave, Temple of the Dog, and solo projects. Along with covers that could come from the likes of Michael Jackson, the Beatles, Creedence, and Zeppelin (plus tunes from last year's Soundgarden reunion album, King Animal), Cornell redefines each as a folky meditation, gnarled ballad, or still-muscular anthem, never quite shedding their rock tendrils but revealing myriad fresh dimensions. Americana singer-songwriter Bhi Bhiman opens.  --Rick Mason

Okkervil River
First Avenue
During his decade-plus career fronting shape-shifting folk rockers Okkervil River, Will Sheff has temporarily tried on numerous styles. From the cracked cowboy anthems of 2002's Don't Fall in Love with Everyone You See to the menacing orchestral maneuvers of 2011's I Am Very Far, the sole constants have been his sonorous tenor and adroit lyricism. The group's latest, The Silver Gymnasium, finds the 37-year-old Sheff revisiting his childhood in rural New Hampshire for inspiration. The shiny synths and swinging saxophone sounds of Reagan-era touchstones like Born in the USA remake his band's sound yet again. With Matthew E. White. --Rob Van Alstyne

My Bloody Valentine
Roy Wilkins Auditorium
Kevin Shields and the rest of My Bloody Valentine achieved an unprecedented level of studio-rat wizardry with 1991's Loveless. Then the now-immortal collection of distortion bombs turned out to be their last album for two decades. During the interim, their primordial shoegaze aesthetic -- built from a tool kit of hacksaw guitar riffs, epicene vocals, and muddy percussion -- was mined by countless young bands. But the four-piece out of Dublin finally reclaimed the sound with January's m b v, possibly the heaviest non-metal album of the year. From the midtempo stomper "Only Tomorrow" to the battering "Nothing Is," it's another record of bone-crunching, emotionally transcendent force. More importantly, nobody else could have made it. --Mike Madden
