Pat Mallinger & the Bill Carrothers Trio
Artist's Quarter FRIDAY 11.29 + SATURDAY 11.30
Returning to their favorite local club in what could be its waning days, saxophonist Pat Mallinger and pianist Bill Carrothers both grew up in the Twin Cities before heading to the wider world. Both built sterling reputations among jazz cognoscenti with their technical agility and endless inventiveness, but remain frustratingly below the national radar. Mallinger is based in Chicago, where his band Sabertooth has held the Saturday night slot at the famed Green Mill for a couple of decades. Carrothers lives in Michigan's Upper Peninsula but has a thriving performance and recording career in Europe. When the two friends, periodic bandmates since high school, get together, sparks really fly, as they did on last year's live album, Home on Richmond. -Rick Mason

A Tribute to the Replacements
First Avenue
The reunited 'Mats may have yet to appear locally, but First Ave's annual tribute should be pretty cool in itself. The growing slew of local bands that'll be on hand include the Melismatics, Slimboree, Ol' Yeller, Blackberry Brandy Boys, Fury Things, Mad Ripple, Vandy & Friends, Crankshaft & the Gear Grinders, Stereo Confession, and Myotis. Besides nuggets from throughout 'Mats history, there'll be a complete run through the group's pivotal 1983 album Hootenanny, with guest vocalists promised. Proceeds will benefit the Slim Dunlap Fund and Twin Cities Music Community Trust. -Rick Mason
