Top 10 must-see Minnesota music videos this week

Categories: Local Frames

Local Frames is a weekly column spotlighting the best new music videos featuring musicians and directors with Minnesota ties.

This week we get Local Frames going with a striking new video from Red Mountain, an intriguing experimental musical collective out of Duluth. We're also featuring clips from Nyteowl, Typsy Panthre, Alex Jordan, Orchyd, and Ecid ft. Sean Anonymous and Rapper Hooks. In addition, we're highlighting some terrific recent in-studio performances from Dosh and GRRRL PRTY, an insightful video regarding the recent upgrade to First Avenue's sound system by Electro-Voice, as well as a compelling mini-documentary on Rap For Life, a local concert benefit series that is set to take place on December 6. Enjoy!

Red Mountain - "Put Me Through"

Duluth's Red Mountain is a sprawling musical collective led by keyboardist/multi-media artist Anton Jimenez-Kloeckl. This stirring video for "Put Me Through," which was produced by Lakefront Films, also features a trio of enthralling dancers, who add their own evocative nature to the song. Red Mountain's new album, Scowl Lightly, is set to be released by the good folks at Chaperone Records on December 6, and Twin Cities music fans will get to see the band up close and personal at the Turf Club this Friday, November 29, when they open for Strange Names.

Dosh - "Blue Jay Way (Live on the Current)"

We recently gave you the lowdown on the forthcoming Minnesota Beatle Project Volume 5, and this inventive, engrossing Current studio session by Dosh is a live performance of "Blue Jay Way," his contribution from that collection. Dosh builds layer upon layer onto the track, as the recognizable Beatles number is gradually transformed into something entirely new and original, as only Dosh can do it. This is one of the better in-studio performances that I've seen in recent memory, and if the version on the Minnesota Beatle Project is anywhere close to being this good, music fans are in for a real treat.

Nyteowl - "Get In It"

Minneapolis dance-poppers Nyteowl are back with a funky, R&B-laden new album, Gold Girl, and the first single lifted from the new record is the pulsating, "Get In It." The retro-tinged video features numerous oddball images interspersed with live footage of the band performing at Cause, all of which is pushed along by the intoxicating beat of the track itself. Hopefully, Nyteowl pan some local shows in support of the new record, as these enthralling songs should get Twin Cities fans dancing.

Typsy Panthre - "Pretty In Pink"

Typsy Panthre have just released a rain-drenched new video for their cover of the Psychedelic Furs' aching classic, "Pretty In Pink." The clip features animation of rainfall crafted by Allison LaBonne, which only adds to the wistful nature of the track, which is also featured on Typsy Panthre's self-titled debut. The group is set to perform at the upcoming Korda Records Showcase at the Cedar on Saturday, and hopefully this lovely cover will find its way into their setlist, just as it did back in January at the first Korda Showcase.

New Electro-Voice Sound System Installation at First Avenue

Anyone who has seen a show at First Avenue recently knows full well that the sound system at the legendary club has undergone a substantial upgrade. The knowledgeable folks at Electro-Voice are the ones behind the improvements in sound, and this interesting video reveals just what it took to make the upgrade happen. The clip also features plenty of behind-the-scenes glimpses of the club, as well as an insightful interview with general manager Nate Kranz about the motivations behind wanting to improve the sound at the city's best live music venue. But even if none of that sounds interesting, you should still watch the video if only to check out the sweet Beyoncé T-shirt that First Ave's marketing coordinator Machen Davis is sporting. It is 100 percent awesome, and I want one.
