Howler announce new album with fresh shenanigans

We nearly got through 2013 without having to think about Howler. And if you need a refresher as to why people got sick of this scrappy and talented local garage-rock act, go read this.

Anyhow, today Jordan Gatesmith and co. announced in a very roundabout and cocky way that they're putting out a new album next year.

It starts with a heartfelt thanks for the support the band has received so far, and you can bet that the Howler haters' bloodlust is already building. You can almost hear them muttering things like, "Will this be the last we hear of these little twerps who don't respect the Minneapolis scene?"

But no. Not in the least. And the grammatical errors start popping up. And with a "heavy heart," they announce that the pressure is getting to them, and... a new record is coming out soon. No word if this will come out via Rough Trade, but it looks like there haven't been any updates on their label page in over a year.

Here's the full announcement (sans the Geoff Tate EPK they attached):

Hello.
An update for our fan:
We truly, truly appreciate you for buying our first EP and LP and supporting us so extensively. It's truly amazing to us all that you like our music so much. All the live shows, all the parties, all the money. We can't begin to express how indebted we are to you. It means so dang much.

Thanks for everything

UNFORTUNAtly, with a very heavy heart, we must tell you that due to mounting pressure from the label and our rapidly deteriorating mental health...

This isn't easy for any1 of us but...

our new record is COMING OUT SOON

Self aware or not...arrogance and disrespect should not be rewarded with publicity. There are plenty of great local musicians releasing quality albums that the City Pages could be writing about who don't have attitude problems. Also, I'm aware of what was and wasn't done in the 60's, which is proportionally before my time. Regardless, one does not need a complete knowledge of history to refrain from being a jerk. As a side note, your fb banner includes a Tardis...well done.

Yes, because all 18 year old musicians are totally self-aware, and also completely aware of what was or wasn't done back in the 80s.

So sick of seeing anti-Howler propaganda. Has the citypages ever written an unbiased article about Howler? Those guys are super supportive of the local music scene. They go to local shows and buy local music.

a photo taken by city pages staffer? that the band would never use? in response to an article that could have been informative but came off as a smear campaign? why would howler have any loyalty to a town whose music press is so demeaning anyway? i hope you feel silly when they release their new record. continue with your smug comments folks.

@gimme_noise most of your coverage is spot on but this sort of shit makes it seem like "us vs them". They show up to shows & buy local music

never heard of this fool..looking at his photo I know why.

@gimme_noise Perpetuating the "local scene hate" garbage. They have been at like 2 local shows a week dude! They did house shows all summer.

You still don't have to think about them. Any kid who promotes himself with a photo like that and can't take the time to even spellcheck an announcement to his fans isn't worthy of your attention. Newsflash: rebellious, cocksure punk isn't a cool image anymore. It was cool in the 80's, it's just sad now.

Citypages are the ones who took that photo of him.... and asked him to pose like that....

The band makes it terribly easy to demean them.

Let's be clear: CityPages staff photographer took that photo years ago, posed Jordan like that (as a joke), and now they are using it to smear with no substantive critique.  Secondly, Howler's fans enjoy jokes and don't give a fuck about tryhard, the announcement is totally on point there.

@MattHelgeson Sure. Most folks have just moved on. Every so often I run into someone who still freaks upon mention of this band.

@gimme_noise it is stirring people up in a good way! calling them twerps is demeaning and problematic.

@gimme_noise yeah i'm sure yr right. picture of him flipping 2 birds w/the cutoff sleeves jeans jacket is the cutest ever though

@lukeyd7123 Agreed. People who actively *hate* individuals they have only ever read about and have never met is a much greater societal problem than anything having to do with Howler.

@ReedFischerAin't that the truth. Any press is good press. But this picture wasn't part of their promotions, and is editorial. I mean it won't hurt anybody really, haters will hate, fans will eat it up,

but it does means that in the twin cities I'll keep bumping into townies with nothing better to do than hate those kids who got a little shine, and that might be a little awkward cause I hang out with those kids. #whitepeopleproblems
