Nicholas David with Ashley DuBose
First Avenue, Minneapolis
Saturday, December 28, 2013

Nicholas David is a man of a thousand voices and a man of a thousand layers of clothing. The singer is known for his soulful voice, but on a chilly evening in late December at First Avenue, he arrived onstage in uniform with a full band, red jacket, and his beard.

Opening for David was another Voice contestant Ashley DuBose. In a black dress and her signature blonde do that was growing out, Ashley was the perfect warmup act for Nicholas, complementing him in stage presence without being cut from too much of the same cloth. Her original tunes were pulled from relationship troubles and her set was sprinkled with covers of a jazzy Lorde's "Royals" and, of course, Rihanna's "Diamonds" in which DuBose embodied the singer's emotions and soul.

Before he was "Nicholas David," Nick "The Feelin'" Mrozinski was a local celebrity; the show only brought out what Minnesota already knew. The band has been working on a new album, and Nicholas introduced a few new pieces including "Cool" and a song written specifically "for kids" that leaned more towards lullaby-like rather than Wiggles territory.

When you hear David's voice, it is slightly reminiscent of Aaron Neville, yet he can bend and shape it to cater to the song, whether it be country, indie-folk, or funk. At times, with such a large band onstage, an eight-plus band -- it varied depending on the song -- he often echoes Iron & Wine in delivery and sound. This happened on Huey Lewis's "Power of Love," which turned into a 15-minute jam session on the keyboards.
