Tower of Power
Dakota Jazz Club, WEDNESDAY 12.11 THROUGH SATURDAY 12.14
Tower of Power's blistering horns and wickedly funky grooves will reign for four nights on the band's annual return to the Dakota. Founding members Emilio Castillo and Doc Kupka -- on tenor and bari saxophone, respectively -- continue to spark the 45-year-old 10-piece's marvelously muscular, tenaciously tight, furiously funky trademark R&B, forever defined as Oakland soul. Currently, there's a new album, Hipper Than Hip, taken from a fiery 1974 radio studio performance; Ray McKinley is currently subbing for longtime bassist Rocco Prestia, who's awaiting a kidney transplant; and this is a swan song of sorts for vocalist Larry Braggs, who will be leaving the band at the end of the year after being onboard since 1999. --Rick Mason

The Breeders
First Avenue
The Breeders' Mountain Battles and Fate to Fatal EP just barely predated the '90s-indie-rock revival of the early 2010s, but now Kim Deal and Co. are now marking the 20th anniversary of Last Splash in grand style. The stomping but sleek LP features a slew of bangers, particularly "Cannonball," the country escape "Drivin' on 9," and others that take it easier on the distortion pedal. This is billed as a "last chance" for the album, so don't sleep. Opening is Massachusetts four-piece Speedy Ortiz. --Mike Madden
