This week in the ever-so-cold land of Minnesota, the concert landscape heats up. Thursday marks the Best New Bands of 2013 concert featuring Allan Kingdom (above), BBGUN, Black Diet, Frankie Teardrop, Fury Things, GRRRL PRTY and Southwire. Another hot 2013 commodity in Wolf Lords is at the James J. Hill Library. First Avenue welcomes Galactic on Friday and a Joe Strummer tribute on Saturday. Finally, Josh Ritter will be performing at the Fitzgerald while the Black Angels make a return to Minneapolis early next week too.

Wolf Lords
James J. Hill Library
It has been nearly a year since electro-pop producer Grant Cutler and ace vocalist Aby Wolf teamed up to blow minds and shake butts with their debut release as Wolf Lords, and the passing of time has only strengthened the album's appeal. Comprised primarily of swoon-worthy synthetic slow jams with welcome detours into more propulsive pop terrain to change up the mood, it's the sort of record that sounds good in any environment. The finely filigreed tunes seem particularly well-suited to the beautiful acoustics and classy confines of the the James J. Hill Library, where the rarely gigging live duo will headline the night's installment of "Loud at the Library."  -- Rob Van Alstyne

Kenny Brown
Bayport BBQ (FRIDAY 1.31 - SUNDAY 2.2)
A protégé and longtime bandmate of North Mississippi blues icon R.L. Burnside, Kenny Brown is a prodigiously accomplished guitarist in his own right. Brown played with Burnside for 26 years in a relationship so close Burnside often called him his adopted son. Brown has been on his own since Burnside's 2005 death, playing Hill Country classics and other blues nuggets while showing off his deft fingerpicking skills and wicked slide work. His 2011 album Can't Stay Long has two discs: one is a solo, acoustic set recorded on his front porch; the other a wild electric performance that rolls, tumbles and rocks out. Brown will be playing solo during his big three-night stand in Bayport.  Crooked Saws open.-- Rick Mason

Galactic / The Stepkids
First Avenue
One of New Orleans' most formidable bands, Galactic not only tear it up live, they do so with far-reaching, experimental music. Rooted in potent NOLA tendrils of jazz, brass bands, Mardi Gras Indians and second line funk, Galactic complicate the roux with shots of hip-hop, acid jazz, rock and more. The band's last studio effort, Carnivale Electricos, was a brilliant revelation, a dazzling synthesis of New Orleans and Brazilian carnival. It's uncertain what particular tack Galactic will be on this time around, but the latest of a revolving crew of musicians complementing the core quintet is singer Maggie Koerner, a Shreveport native whose bluesy, powerful pipes have been compared to Janis Joplin's. -- Rick Mason

Do you guys purposely never write about shows Skyway Theatre or Mill City Nights ? There are three great shows this weekend between them...

Clearly your omission of Charlie Parr at The Cedar Cultural Center must be due to the act that the show sold out today...
