How and when did you get involved with music photography?

I first got involved in music photography when I became the Art Director for Rift Magazine in 2004 and also started working for 2024 Records. Before that, I was mainly into portrait and fashion photography.

What are some highlights of your professional photography experience?
Flying to Joshua Tree, California to photograph the band Is/Is for the cover of City Pages is definitely one of my highlight moments. Also Austin Psych Fest was another highlight.

Where can people find your work (exhibits, album covers, publications, etc.)?
Most of my current work can be seen in City Pages. Although I am currently getting into music videos as well. Working on a new video for Is/Is coming soon.

What is your favorite part of music photography?
I have always had a strong passion for music. Music photography allows me to freeze a moment in time and capture part of that energy and magic. Getting into shows for free is always good too. Musicians are also great to work with because they are open to experimentation and I never get bored if I am creatively free to try new things.

What dos/don'ts do you have for young photographers who would like to pursue this type of work?
Be prepared to work for free or very little money. You have to love what you do and be willing to work really hard. If you let your passion shine through you will stand out. But learn to say no. Think about what you are putting out there with your name on it. Google your name and see what comes up in an image search. I had to learn the hard way that I didn't want a lobster roll sandwich to come up when someone googled my name, now I don't photograph food photography or I will use an alias. Control what you want your image to be. I am still learning this. There is always a separation between the work you are doing, and the work you WANT to be doing. Stay focused, and organized and you can get there.
