Paper Diamond: We wrote "Wylin" in the back of a bus

Alexander Botwin, better known by the name Paper Diamond, has been touring almost non-stop for the past decade, bringing his eclectic exhibit of multigenre sounds to stages across the globe. This Saturday Paper Diamond will drop his bass-heavy beats onto the dance floor of Mill City Nights, giving us a much needed hot and steamy respite from the frigid outdoors. He will be joined by fellow EDM hard hitters LOUDPVCK and Branchez.

Botwin describes the concept behind Paper Diamond as that of a piece of origami. "No matter what the shape is -- whether its simple or more complex -- its art," he says.

Botwin fondly recalls being taken to violin lessons at a very young age by his mother, a piano teacher. In high school he studied music theory, then attended college for production. After college he played bass and handled production in Pnuma Trio, an electronic music group recognized for their interesting spectrum of sounds.

During this time, Botwin was constantly working on his own music as well. He decided to begin focusing on his solo work and touring under the name Paper Diamond, releasing Levitate in 2011 on the Pretty Lights Music label. Botwin finds creative inspiration in "everything." His unique genre-bending mixture of hip-hop, dubstep, trap and dance beats garnered the attention of Mad Decent label mastermind Diplo. "Basically, Diplo called me up and wanted me to do some songs," he says. Thus, a partnership made in EDM heaven was born.

The result of this pairing has been an onslaught of hits, including a 3 track EP titled Wavesight and the 11-song Paragon EP. This year, Paper Diamond appeared on Diplo's BBC Radio show to showcase a collection of brand new and exclusive tracks, along with Mad Decent label mates TWRK, who will be headlining later this March at First Avenue during Bassgasm 10.

While on tour, Botwin maintains his daily routine of consuming and creating new music. Last week, Paper Diamond and tour mates LOUDPVCK released their brand new track "Wylin." "We wrote the song entirely in the back of the tour bus," Botwin tells Gimme Noise. "We all passed the laptop back and forth, each adding to it until we had the finished product."
