The St. Cloud location of the Electric Fetus will close its doors in May after 27 years in business. The closure will leave the chain's Minneapolis and Duluth stores.

The Fetus made the announcement Friday, and cited the store's lease expiring as the reason behind deciding to consolidate their efforts to two stores.

Here is the store's full statement:

After 27 years in business, the St. Cloud Electric Fetus store will be closing on Friday, May 23, 2014.

It's been incredible to be a part of the St. Cloud community and music scene for many years, and we have great and loyal customers who we will miss. We thank you for your support and patronage. With the St. Cloud store's lease expiring this Spring, it's been a time of reevaluation and future planning for the Fetus. We've decided to concentrate our efforts on the Minneapolis and Duluth markets.

We're in hiring and planning mode in Minneapolis and Duluth and we're looking forward to continuing what's been an exciting and successful ride, in particular the last few years, which have seen some record-setting sales and numbers we've not seen in two decades. We will continue to adjust to best deliver to our customers and continue to strive to make our shopping experience unique and memorable. That's why we continue to host events, in-store performances and have launched locally focused programs such as MinnEconomy. From gifts to music to beyond there's much to be excited about.

As always, thank you for your support.

Over the weekend, the St. Cloud store made it clear that it won't go out without a bang. Via Facebook:
We are not done yet!!! We still have two and a half months in the store. In that time we don't plan on slowing down. There is the Art Crawl on March 21st, Record Store Day on April 19th and more plans to come. Check here for updates or stop in to say hi and buy some tunes! Thanks so much for your support.

The " Electric Fetus " may be leaving St. Cloud, but after one of it's previous renovations I found one of it's tapestry-type of hanging sales event sign which I have hanging on my garage wall. The sales sign is approximately 12 ft x 6 ft sq. and is viewed with nostalgic pride by me. I'm really missing the record store and just like " Bravos " burritos it was and still is a Rock-N-Roll legend in my eyes and heart. When will St. Cloud stop being so anti-liberal and anal-retentive ? hippiegee@gmail.com

TIME Magazine dubbed Minneapolis "Murderapolis" in 1994, when, in that year, we had more murders per-capita than NYC. I hope you don't base all your judgement off magazine articles from the mid-90's.

I can't believe people think this is unsafe. Whittier is a historic neighborhood just blocks from amazing locations like eat street, MCAD, and the MIA. I think these are fairly typical complaints people have when visiting for the first time if not used to metropolitan areas so perhaps take such comments with a grain of salt.

Guys, guys. They call it Murderapolis for a REASON. We're all gonna' die terrifyingly dangerous deaths at the hands of a (a-hem) thug.

Back in the day I used to shop at the Electric Fetus on Franklin and it wasn't terribly bad.  Just keep your smarts about you and watch your surroundings

Baffled by Joe Root's comment. MPLS location in a very unsafe neighborhood? You must not be from 'round here...or you're very afraid of anything that isn't Stearns county vanilla...er, redneck. It's okay. I grew up in Stearns county, I know its true identity.

it's not a dumb statement when you've known people who've been mugged down there after dark.

it's not the restaurant's fault, its the shitty landlords fault.

Joe Root: i'm not a judgemental man, but that is the dumbest statement on the internet today.

I'm laughing at the Minneapolis location being in an unsafe neighborhood.

I have been to the Mpls location over a dozen times Joe Root, and never had a problem or been afraid for my safety.

gonna miss the fetus. Duluth is too far a drive and the minneapolis location is in a very unsafe neighborhood. glad for greek cravings to be expanding because their owner makes very good food and has worked very hard, but not happy about losing fetus because of a shitty, shady landlord.

The St Cloud community is well aware how awesome the Electric Fetus is, and we are doing everything in our power to keep this place either open, or relocated, or whatever we can do to help. Losing the Fetus up here is going to be a huge blow to the music and arts community here in St Cloud. Only record shop for like 90-100 miles in any direction, only place you can sell used CDs/vinyl anywhere in or around St Cloud, and the only place in the area that consigns music for local artists. Yes, we fully realize what a loss this is, and trust me when I say this: there are efforts moving on several fronts to correct this situation in the near future.

The rumor around town here is that Greek Cravings will be expanding into the space currently occupied by the Fetus in order to make more seating and add a salad bar. The landlord of the building they both occupy wants to double the Fetus' rent, which they can't afford to do, but they're offering the space to the Greek Cravings people for much less per month. We here in St Cloud firmly blame the shady landlord for this whole debacle.

bummer, liked that place, just hope they don't close down the place next to it, Greek Cravings..........
