Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong joins the Replacements at Coachella

Categories: Replacements

Paul Westerberg got a replacement for himself on guitar for the second weekend at Coachella via Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. No shit. According to Billboard, the Replacements' main man spent a good portion of his performance on a couch onstage citing back trouble. Armstrong, dubbed an "expansion" of the band and dressed in a plaid suit and bowtie to match bassist Tommy Stinson's garb, stuck around for most of the performance.

The set was reportedly better-received than the Replacements' first weekend in Indio, and Armstrong knew many (but not all) of the songs -- "Can't Hardly Wait," "Alex Chilton," and "Color Me Impressed" -- as well as a long-time fan. At one point, he said "Dreams really do come true!"

Several videos of the Armstrong-assisted Replacements -- who returned to live performance last year for three Riot Fest shows in Toronto, Chicago, and Denver -- have circulated since the performance.
