Journey's Steve Perry joins Eels at St. Paul show

During the encore of the Eels performance at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul, a surprise guest for the ages came along. Journey's best-known vocalist Steve Perry, who has kept a low profile since he left the band in 1998, took Sunday's show in an unexpected direction.

After performing "It's a Motherfucker" from the Eels' 2000 album Daisies of the Galaxy, Perry remarked, "I love that song. I've told you over and over again I love that song... Someday I wanted to sing that song. Tonight was the first time I ever sang it. You know, I don't know why the Eels don't do my music." To that, E replied, "We were just waiting for you." Then, they launched into the Journey classics "Open Arms" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'." No joke.

Given the emotional weight of both parties involved, it was no stretch to get the audience on board for this collaboration. You can hear them singing heartily along for the latter song.

There should be advance warning if any member of Journey is performing. I'd have puked my beer up if I'd have been there. Steve Perry is everything that's wrong about rock n' roll.

For updates on Steve Perry, go to Fan Asylum Facebook page. Steve Perry does NOT have any official social media pages. BUT Fan Asylum still keeps tabs on Steve, as they use to run Journey's Fan Club (Journey Force) back in the 80s/90s! https://www.facebook.com/FanAsylum

Here's what I posted to THE EELS Facebook page: HI EELS! WoW-OMG! THANKS so much for this utter surprise!! =) Perry/Journey Fans have been blowing up social media since last night, including Martha Quinn! I believe last time Steve Perry performed in MN was in 1994, on the 2nd stop (Northrup Auditorium) of his "For The Love Of Strange Medicine" Tour! I was there! I had also been at the 1st show in Milwaukee the night before! Months earlier, a miracle happened, and my ultimate dream came true..I met Steve @KDWB studio, after hearing on the radio that he was stopping by their studio! Almost 20 years ago! FYI: Xcel Energy Center didn't exist back in 1994.~~ Anyway, well played EELS!! =)

Steve Perry was not the "founding vocalist" of Journey. He was hired on 2-3 albums in.
