The Idan Raichel Project
Keyboardist, singer, composer and producer Idan Raichel leads Israel's most popular band, something all the more extraordinary because in the volatile Middle East the Idan Raichel Project embraces multiculturalism and a message of hope and tolerance. The music on Raichel's latest, Quarter to Six, is primarily reflective international pop entwined with rich influences from the Mediterranean region and beyond. Elegant, generally acoustic arrangements, with occasional lean orchestrations, enhance the beauty of alluring melodies sung mostly in Hebrew. But an impressive array of guests, including fado star Ana Moura and Malian guitar monster Vieux Farka Touré, add lyrics in Portuguese, French, Arabic, Spanish and German for a stirring polyglot experience. Live, the Project will be a ten-piece band. -Rick Mason
