This August, we are invited to celebrate the gift of FMLY. A crowd-funded experimental music festival that has had previous incarnations in Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix, Brooklyn, and Boston is hoping to take root in Minneapolis.

FMLY Fest 2014 is a week's worth of house shows, instrument building workshops, cookouts, and backyard plays. It culminates on August 8-9 at the In the Heart of the Beast -- home of many fine puppet and mask theater productions -- in the Powderhorn-Midtown area of South Minneapolis with a two-day festival. Among the approximately 40 local and touring groups taking part are Pony Bwoy, Kitten Forever, France Camp, Frankie Teardrop, Fort Wilson Riot, Some Pulp, and Animal Lover.

The event is organized by Andrew Todryk, who also runs the MJ MJ record label, and it is intended as a "people-powered" event that does not rely on sponsorships to get off the ground. A totally attainable Indiegogo campaign has been launched to offset the cost of the PA rental and use of the theater space. Check it out here. As always, there are tiered rewards, including a two-day pass to FMLY Fest for $17, and for the more adventurous donor, a sound reactive light crystal for the giver at the $150 level.

I love the idea and many of the artists as well, but why have a paid indoor event in the summer when there are free or low-priced events outdoors, often 2 or 3 or 4 on the same weekend?  That same Saturday is the Square Lake Film And Music Festival, as well as the Pizza Luce Block Party.  Not to mention that when you have a festival of primarily local bar bands you can see them for free just about any week of the year, indoors or outdoors.  It just doesn't make any sense, especially in this summer festival crazy town.

@frustratedfest yeah i dunno if that really makes sense.  this isn't just a 35 band show at the hexagon.  this lineup is freaking bonkers good, and the touring bands are all outrageous.  not to mention the art installations / projections / marketplace / etc.  and i dunno about you but i'd way rather pay $17 to see 35 amazing bands then see lizzo and girl party for free in a parking lot.

Unlike many festivals and block parties held In the twin cities this summer, it's important to remember that FMLY is true to its DIY roots. There are no corporate sponsors or businesses backing the fest. All of the funds raised through the indie gogo, fundraising events and ultimately ticket sales goes towards paying the artists and musicians. All of the people involved thus far have been volunteers; bands performing for free at he fundraiser events, installation building, ALL of the work is through volunteers. FMLY is proud to showcase some of the best talent in the twin cities, as well as the mind blowing touring acts in a new format with both indoor and outdoor activities. Emphasizing how wonderful our community truly is. Heart of the beast theater hosting the fest is like a match made in heaven, as it is a huge community building resource for the city since the 1970s. All of this is meant to bring people together in a way that is new and exciting.
