Cause Spirits & Soundbar is becoming a sports bar

Categories: Canceled

The Uptown/Lyn-Lake area is officially losing one of its most prominent (and legal) sources of live music. Plans were revealed this week to turn Cause Spirits & Soundbar into a sports bar in September.

In late June, it was announced that Cause (formerly Sauce) would close following Saturday night's show celebrating the venue's 5th anniversary. Black Diet's Jonathan Tolliver wrote a heartfelt farewell to the venue, and many held out a tiny sliver of hope that the place would still carry on its live music tradition in a different form. But we now know that the intersection of Lyndale and Lake will come to be known for brews, sports on TV, and... just glance over at the condos up the street to figure out the rest of the equation.

Vita.mn reports that a couple managers from Mac's Industrial Sports Bar are behind this new venture. Around the beginning of September, the space will be known as the Iron Door Pub, which suggests that they'll be replacing the glass ones currently in place.

Co-owners Dan Fehrenkamp and Clint Matiska "plan to knock out the wall separating the bar and venue side, add plenty of TVs and bump up tap beer offerings from six to 24."

Remodeling is expected to begin not long after the ringing in our ears from Saturday night's show subsides.

Attempts to contact staff at Cause were not immediately returned, but we will update this story as new details come to light.

To be honest you can't name a sportsbar in uptown. They dont exist. This will fill the need. I get that losing Cause sucks, but settle down about adding a sports bar.

This wont ruin the vibe of uptown. That happened long ao. If anything, Uptown was completely ruined when the most magical bar ever, the Uptown Bar, was replaced by a frickin Apple Store. A piece of me died that day.

How this place can't make money is a testament to poor management at it's finest in my opinion. What a goldmine of a location.

I'd complain, but I haven't been there in like 2 years. My entertainment dollar isn't swaying their opinion on the direction of their business. Maybe a new music venue will open up, or someone else will change to that.

Ha. Is this what we call foreshadowing? (6 months later) just announced, Sports is closing its doors for good.

Wow. Because there's a definite shortage of those in the country.

Why couldn't it be a rock-themed bar and keep the local music vending machine? I guess we have way too many rock bars and not enough sports bars.

I don't think I've wanted a dislike button more in my life than at this very moment.

I think they should just call it the "Repurposed Logo Bar" and leave it at that. It will withstand several decades.

I saw Toussaint Morrison perform @ Cause Soundbar.

Another blow to the live music scene, but why see up and coming bands when you could listen to some dj spin top 40's or put on pandora

Didn't KFAN try this in Arden Hills? And didn't they try this at Thee Mecca Mall? Both pretty much flopped. Such a small audience for the area. If they did this on block E or next to a sports arena it might do just OK. But uptown is a terrible choice for a sports bar. Maybe they are looking to open and close as a tax write off or something. Yes CyberX was a great coffee shop.

god uptown is getting so douchey...maybe they'll replace the CC Club with a Wild Bills. Ugh.

Always sad to see good music venues go, though.

That area was lacking a good sports bar. Champions doesn't exactly cut it. There's room for all types. One man's douche is another man's hipster.

Sounds good to me - prices to actually go to games have gotten way too expensive. This will be a nice option to watch some games without dealing with high ticket prices, high beer prices and huge crowds. Go Bears! Go Black Hawks!! Go Cubs!!!

what makes me even more sad (being a musician) is that Live Music just keeps getting pushed further and further away. Uptown has been KNOWN for it's Live Music Scene....amazing bands ..and this bar WAS one of the more well known live music places..... and the article states..... we hope to keep the spirit of live music... You ever PERFORM in a SPORTS BAR? hahahaAAAAA!!!!! .... good lawd...i guess 'online performance' in it's decade or so of newness...will and is becomming the big thing for 'live music' ....and you can stay home in your pJ's on rainy snowy icy minnesota nights..... ....

changing the vibe of Uptown and thinking it makes it better...is like taking a perfect thing and changing it....fixing what's not broken. Uptown is FULL of vitality, diversity, culture, local art and amazing lil places in every nook n cranny .. it's damn sad and clearly 'thoughtless' to change into some 'crock of popularity' in a place that's popular simply because it IS it's own thing.
