Shonen Knife to play 1,000th show at Turf Club
Shonen Knife are hitting a major career milestone later this year when they return to the Twin Cities. The garage rockers from Osaka, Japan, have a September show at Turf Club marking their 1,000th since forming in 1981. They plan to celebrate with a special set list with founding member Atsuko Yamano re-joining the band.
The St. Paul date is their fifth stop in a cross-continental tour that runs from September 11 through October 21, and it is pure coincidence that the millennial stop is in the Twin Cities. The energetic band has played the Twin Cities numerous times, documenting their last two visits on their blog and even including photos from the Mall of America. While the band enjoys the people and energy in Minneapolis-St. Paul, it seems their first impressions were of our weather. "I don't remember [our first visit] well, but I think it was the show with Nirvana on December 10, 1993 at Roy Wilkins Auditorium," says vocalist/guitarist Naoko. I just remember it was so cold."
The band is taking online requests via Twitter and Facebook for their September 16 set list, with a catalog of well over 100 to choose from. The band is typically a three-piece and Atsuko, who is joining them in St. Paul, is also Naoko's sister. She will be along and helping the band with the tour on all stops though it remains unknown if she'll play with the group in other cities.
When asked how Naoko has kept it fresh after 995 shows, she says, "It's unconscious and natural," noting the importance to "keep myself in good condition for shows...keep my equipment keep well...[and] to make a suitable set list for each show."
