Piñata Records Field Day
Nomad World Pub
Watching the rise of Piñata Records has been like a heartwarming episode of "The little label that could." Expanding from a vanity title for members of local soul outfit Southside Desire, Piñata has found a way to unite a diverse but thematically similar group of bands. The label now boasts a roster of six acts including power-popsters Mystery Date, the garage maniacs in Narco States, and Minneapolis's new favorite act: Black Diet. To celebrate the label's 2nd birthday, Piñata's throwing Field Day, a free, all-ages mini-festival on the Nomad World Pub's newly minted outdoor lawn area. Field Day is being framed around five acts on Pinata with new music on the way in the rest of 2014, with Mystery Date and Narco States both taking the plunge into their first full-length LP and Southside Desire gearing up for their sophomore release. Two new additions to their lineup are Blacksploitation-funk-influenced Grolar Bears and veteran scuzzmeisters the Sex Rays, who will be putting out records of their own. Expect games and activities for the youth in attendance, and prizes for adults. -Zach McCormick
