Replace the bling with beads and the designer labels with hand-sewn stitches— there’s a new hip-hop trio in town and they’re not kidding when they shout DIY. As white as Minnesota winter, the members of Nancy Drew Crew are quite far from your typical rappers and so are their feminist friendly messages, ranging from rhymes about soil contamination, critiques of the university system, misogyny and even hygiene. Intelligent and just plain witty, MC Smells, Miss Mayhem and their DJ, Skullbuster, sat down for a quick chat and explained more about their extremely quirky take on hip-hop.

As the host of The Riot Act Reading Series—a monthly spoken word event at the Turf Club, (and most recently at the fabulous Bedlam Theatre), guitarist in the band Francis Gumm, co-founder of the legendary art gallery and p-rock pantheon, Speedboat Gallery, and member of Electric Arc Radio cast, Paul D is one busy dude. When it comes to podcasting in the land of 10,000 lakes, the first name that comes to mind is Garrick Van Buren. Garrick has produced over 70 podcasts since debuting The First Crack Podcast back in October 2004, featuring episodes on wine tasting, exotic peanut butter, and pontooning. Van Buren has expanded his empire to include Podcast Minnesota, MNInteractive, and the WorkBetter Weblog.
