The Ericksons
Here's one: What's squirmy and pink, weighs about eight and a half pounds, and can stop even the most steamrollin' awesome band on a rockin' roll? For Wizards Are Real -- the only band in town so awesome they don't need words -- it was baby Colin, born on Record Store Day (April 21) to bandmates Melanie Bergstrom and Brian O'Neil. For the Ericksons it was baby Enzo, born July 1 to Bethany Valentini and her husband Tommy.

Gimme Noise decided to check in on both acts and discuss the challenges of getting back to work and playing shows after bringing a new bandmate into the world.

Adam and Daniel Levy
Last month, the Honeydogs frontman Adam Levy shared the heartbreaking news of his 21-year-old son Daniel's passing after a lengthy battle with mental illness. The community response has been enormous, and for that Levy's family has expressed gratitude. Although there was already a memorial service in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. -- where Daniel resided at the time of his death -- Saturday, February 18 marks the local gathering to remember the young artist, thinker, skateboarder, and friend to many in the community. It takes place at the History Theatre in St. Paul, and "should be a pretty epic day of music and eulogizing," according to Levy.

Mother's Day is usually a pretty easy holiday to shop for, though it is sometimes shamefully hard to remember. In the past you've probably spent cash on flowers, candy, jewelry, and other cliché gifts that moms typically love. How about something different this year? Give her something you'll both appreciate: time. Check out these mom-friendly happenings around town this weekend.

Give the gift of green this holiday season

GreenGiftsFairlogo-%20with%20text_medium.jpg
It's not hard to believe that Americans produce about twice as much waste as usual during the holiday season. From gift packaging to paper plates at parties and even pollution from additional travel, the environment suffers from as much seasonal stress as the average, frazzled person. This Saturday, Midtown Global Market hosts the Green Gift Fair, an event offering green wares, information on green living, demonstrations, crafts, and more. Ami Voeltz, executive director of Do It Green, took a moment to speak to City Pages about being green during the holidays.

Ye Olde Summer Roadtrip

Categories: Family

Orlin and Mandy Ostby are more courageous than most parents planning a summer trip with four children. They aren't going to fly to Disneyland or drive to Mount Rushmore. They're walking along side an oxcart with the kids for more than 400 miles from near the Canadian border down to the State Fair grounds. The Ostbys will begin their march in St. Vincent, Minn., a town of 117 in the extreme northwest part of the state. They'll travel the historic Pembina Trail which was one of the early trade routes that led to the Twin Cities' formation and development. Orlin knows all about the Pembina and the laborious task of traveling. Fifty years ago, during Minnesota's centennial celebrations, Orlin trained the ox that another man used to traverse the Pembina.
