Lollapalooza 2013 full lineup: The Cure, Nine Inch Nails and more

A bit of the Lollapalooza 2013 lineup trickled out a couple weeks ago, but today this year's offerings got taut, dark, and -- most importantly -- official. Though the plan initially was to drop the full, gargantuan list of bands in two more weeks, the timeline got pushed up when a pre-April Fool's poster made its way online and it looked quite real.

On it, we found names such as Nine Inch Nails and the Cure, as well as previously confirmed performers Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend, the National, and Postal Service. Today we discover that a greater blend of genres does exist in the 2013 iteration of Lollapalooza via Ellie Goulding, Kendrick Lamar, Lana Del Rey, Crystal Castles, 2 Chainz, New Order, Cat Power, Death Grips, and plenty more. Peep the lineup coming to Chicago's Grant Park on the weekend of August 2-4 below.

Lollapalooza 2013 lineup: Mumford & Sons, Phoenix, Vampire Weekend & more

What a difference a year makes when it comes to Lollapalooza, Chicago's destination music festival in Grant Park every summer. The first details of the lineup have emerged, and compared to the rockist-leaning 2012 bill it's looking very much like anything that can loosely fit within the antiquated "indie" idea will get prime placement at the 2013 running on August 2-4.

Leading the way is Mumford & Sons, the Grammy-winning Brit strummers who sold a ton of copies of Babel last year. Add to that Phoenix and Vampire Weekend, both who will drop hotly anticipated albums this year. Also, there's the Killers, who definitely want to get some more miles out of 2012's Battle Born. Though the full lineup is still forthcoming, a few other likely acts were published in a Chicago Tribune report.

Ready for some GIFs? To quote Ozzy Osbourne, "I can't fucking hear you!" I said, ARE YOU READY FOR SOME GIFS?! This past weekend's running of Lollapalooza in Chicago was intense. The heat, the monsoon-like storm on Saturday, and even the lobster corn dogs all exceeded what the human body can take on a regular basis. But it was still a glorious three days for music and social behavior. Gimme Noise photographer Erik Hess' lens pointed every which way, and captured these 25 GIFs featuring the Black Keys, Black Sabbath, Fun, and so much more.

With every year that passes, it feels like electronic dance music gains a bigger foothold in the summer festival circuit, and the climb in popularity was especially apparent at Lollapalooza 2012. Music that used to be confined to clubs and illicit warehouse parties has been adopted wholeheartedly by a new generation -- a generation that now has as many ties to house and dubstep as it does to rock and rap. The saturation of dance beats in television, radio, and advertising of all sorts has worked its eventual magic, allowing DJs and producers to conquer the world without ever needing to pick up a guitar. From Avicii to Justice to Bassnectar, the headliners at the Midwest's biggest music festival are proving that rave is now a huge component of mainstream teen culture.

Sigur Rós unleashed a baptism of ethereal beauty that blanketed the tightly packed occupants of Lollapalooza's Red Bull stage on the final day of Lollapalooza. The four members recruited eight other musicians to recreate the band's heavenly sound -- including a brass section and airy background vocals.

There's no musician who has worked harder than Jack White over the past decade. As the figure within the White Stripes, the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather, and now his solo work, garagebluessoulrawkmeister White has done everything to deserve a coveted headlining slot at Lollapalooza. Now, what pray tell does he do with a couple hours and a couple bands? He turns the thing into an entry package for Jazz Fest 2013.

What have we learned following Lollapalooza 2012? Not only do reunions (Afghan Whigs, Black Sabbath, At the Drive-in) still rule, but so do the prevailing genres of EDM and rock. The third day of the Chicago Megabus of a fest proved to be the most temperate -- which was appropriate, because we were the most tired. Still, jetting around in the allergen-infested air for one last dance proved highly satisfactory.

Nuggets from the final Lolla day of 2012 follow.

The second day of Lollapalooza 2012 could not have been more different than the first. A bunch of noted cancellations -- B.o.B, Alabama Shakes, etc. -- subtracted potential for some of the best shows of the afternoon when the skies ripped open and doused everything in sight. The temperature and tone had shifted by the early evening, and Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr. took full advantage of it.

Here are a few capsules from Saturday's slate from Lollapalooza 2012.

Frank Ocean & the Weeknd
Lollapalooza at Grant Park, Chicago
Saturday, August 4, 2012

In case you haven't been paying attention, R&B is enjoying a new life. Forget everything you know about "that boy/that girl" subject matter and trade it in for a taste of drugs, sex, and regret. It all gets wrapped up in the emptiness of a lengthy party that gets mistaken for high society. Singers Abel Tesfaye and Christopher Breaux operate under the names The Weeknd and Frank Ocean respectively, and their recent contributions have done much to reshape the face of modern R&B. Both of them made noteworthy appearances during the second day of Lollapalooza, and they each had something different to say to a muddy festival crowd.

With additional reporting by Reed Fischer

The 2012 installment of Lollapalooza has thus far brought the requisite extremes, in terms of performances and potent weather. A two-hour delay cut through the middle of Saturday's entertainment at Chicago's Grant Park, and a good many people were wishing they had just the record heat to contend with when the storm clouds rolled in.

At about 3:30 p.m., word began circulating the grounds that bad weather was approaching, and that performances would be suspended. Indie rockers Chairlift, the blues reinventors Alabama Shakes, and pop-rapper B.o.B were all casualties of what turned out to be close to three hours of a warranted rain delay.
