U of M Comedy Team in Semi-finals

The semester is winding down at the University of Minnesota, but one Gopher team is just now entering the home stretch of their season. The U of M comedy team is currently neck and neck with Ohio State University to make it to the finals of the Rooftop College Comedy Competition.

MinniHaha: Splendid Improv with Splendid Things (and friends)

Splendid.jpg
Ask a comic from Chicago about the Windy City's venues for local standup, and you'll likely hear a lot of grumbling about too few rooms and too many improv shows. They might shortly thereafter grumble about moving to Minneapolis. The Twin Cities standup scene, meanwhile, is well-served and appears to be doing a bit of expanding.

MinniHaHa: The Monday Night Comedy Series

MNCS.jpg
Without a doubt, the strangest and most unpredictable weekly comedy show in the Twin Cities is the Monday Night Comedy Series at the Beat Coffeehouse. Not only does the MNCS feature the best improv and standup comics from the local scene -- as well as a smattering of spoken word artists and poets performing lighter fare -- but on a given night you might see, say, someone painted blue and clad in full Smurf regalia doing a Gargamel-themed set, or a Cool Whip eating contest. And every show opens with a reading from the novelization of Robocop II.

MinniHaha: Ralphie May is still standing

MayPic.jpg

Ah, Spring, 2003. That pristine time was the comedy equivalent of September 10 -- nobody anticipated the horrors to come. But shortly thereafter the ground shook, the heavens rumbled, and NBC's Last Comic Standing was birthed like a screaming turd-baby from the puckered asshole of American culture. At long last, standup had a mediocrity competition to rival the various dubious musical-themed reality TV shows.

MinniHaha: Tim Harmston at Acme

TimH.jpg
There's no question about this week's can't-miss show -- Maria Bamford doing a full week at Acme. But there's more than one good reason to get down to Acme this week. Local standup standout Tim Harmston, who will open for Bamford, is one of Acme's sharpest and most entertaining regular performers, no small feat at a club whose cadre of in-house comics could put plenty of national headliners to shame.

Harmston first took the stage early in the decade, but it was winning the Funniest Person in the Twin Cities contest in 2002 that kick-started his career. He's since gone on to tour across the country, participate in Comedy Central's Open Mic Fight, and appeared on NBC's Last Comic Standing.

MinniHaha: Patrick Bauer headlines Laugh. Rock. Repeat.

DeathSquad500.jpg

Rock 'n' roll and comedy are a natural pairing; most comics play the guitar (badly), and most musicians think they're funny. The inimitable Gus Lynch is uniting Twin Cities' singers and the jokesters for the latest installment of his Laugh. Rock. Repeat. series, and this one promises to be a barnburner. Along with the musical talents of the self-explanatory One Man Dan and the melodic tunes of Mise en Place, two thirds of the Minneapolis Comedy Death Squad will perform, complete with a headlining set from Patrick Bauer.

MinniHaha: Ribaldry with Rob Delaney

DelaneyPic.jpg

The Joke Joint website warns aimless comedy seekers to beware of bringing parents, bosses or timid friends to Rob Delaney's weekend-long stand at the club this week. And it's a real warning, not like "May Contain Nuts" or "Terrorist Threat Elevated." But those with the cajones (or huevos -- that's you, ladies!) to enjoy some full-contact comedy will be well-rewarded.More >>

MinniHaha: Dwight York at the Joke Joint

Dwight.jpg

It's a new era of bipartisanship, which means that we can all agree on a few things: The stimulus package, for instance, is definitely what this country needs -- except maybe it's the worst thing to happen to America since the band America. Al Franken as Senator is sweeter than SNL circa 1978 -- or he's worse than SNL circa 1985 to the present. At the very least we can concur that the one show absolutely guaranteed to be hilarious this week is Dwight York at the Joke Joint.

MinniHaha: Pee Your Pants Monthly at Bryant-Lake Bowl

681b1.jpg

What could be more romantic than Minneapolis in February? The streets are aglow with phlegm-tinted slush, the sloping freeway hillsides have shed their ivory coats to reveal mangy patches of dead grass, ladies are showing off their figures in their slightly-less-bulky pre-spring jackets, and the fellas have stopped wearing their ridiculous ear-flap hats. Take that, Paris. In the spirit of love, Twin Cities-style, the inimitable Dorkus Rainbowpants collective presents the latest installment of Pee Your Pants Monthly this Thursday at the Bryant-Lake Bowl.

Chad Daniels CD Release Party

ChadDaniels.jpg

Chad Daniels is a true Minnesota comic. While other comedians make good in the Cities, then split for one coast or the other, Daniels made a name for himself at Acme and other clubs around the metro area, then made the big move to ... Fergus Falls. "It sounds weird to say you just want to be the C-student, but standup is my first love," he says. "I'm not looking to get a TV show or anything like that. I just want to keep writing and making CDs. I don't want to be famous. What I want out of comedy is to make a comfortable living." More >>
