In defending Michelle Obama from a caller's accusation, O'Reilly said:
"I don't want to go on a lynching party against Michelle Obama unless there's evidence, hard facts, that say this is how the woman really feels."
Now normally I'm not one to play language police--I recently stirred up a hornet's nest of comments when I disagreed with Hillary Clinton throwing a tantrum over an off-hand reference to "pimping out" Chelsea--but this comes barely a week after President Bush condemned nooses, saying:
"The era of rampant lynching is a shameful chapter in American history."
I guess the question is: Do you think O'Reilly would have used the term "lynching party" if he was talking about a white wife, or was this some subconscious expression of racism?

O'reilly should be suspended indefinitely.
This is worse than the golf commentator
She was joking. O'reilly is suggesting real harm

Racist? Of course it is racist. And it is an expression of racism, hidden or otherwise. There is no way he would have said this about a white woman.
Shameful, shameful, shameful! I really wonder why he hasn't lost his job!
Posted by: Bruce Reeves at February 20, 2008 7:51 PM
I find his comments ludacris! How can he possibly get away with this when Imus was super suspended for something even smaller. I say he needs to get fired, maybe he will get it this time.

Deal is, we shouldn't accept this nonsense from these talking head idiots - calling black female athletes "nappy headed ho's" on TV, then saying they're getting a "lynch party" together for a black female. C'mon! Unacceptable in any context. Say something like that in your job - which probably isn't broadcasting this vile juvenile crap to millions, and you'll be handed a card board box to gather your belongings and given 15 mins to vacate the facility. O'Reilly is an idiot anyway - who cistens to this angry lemon sucking clown, anyway? Just how dumb do you have to be?

Hi, I'm bill Orielly, and I'm so full of my self it hurts. I strute to I'm so sexy every night, when I come home. My head is so big you would think I'm on steriods. On the serious side. I'm 26 and sick of this repression of blacks and minorites. America has issues Ya who dosen't but the only way to solve issues is to relaize what they are? Do I blame a black woman for being proud of america For the first time in her life. Heck no, I'm white and I can't agree with her more. Take a look at the poverty level of black americans. It's sick, something needs to change and it's deffinatly not michele Obama. It's retarded, rich stuck up folks like Bill O'rielly. Who need to get their heads straight. You know what he won't apoligize untill someone makes him or he gets fired. Let's hope he gets fired. I say everyong watch his show until he apoligizes if he dosen't don't ever watch him again. Ratings plummit and he gets what he deserives...

Take O'Reilly off the air NOW.
Posted by: Audrey Bentz at February 20, 2008 11:35 PM
I strongly dislike Bill.
But the term lynching does not belong part and parcel to the black experience.
Lynch mob goes back to the old west before it makes a stop in the victimization of blacks.
Come on people, there are a lot of reasons to hate O'Rielly. This is not one of them.
Posted by: Anonymous at February 20, 2008 11:54 PM
He is very much aware of of the power and effect of his words. Which is why he expresses himself this way. How can he be allowed to do this? This is not the america that I want for myself.
Posted by: Yumi Yamamoto at February 21, 2008 12:02 AM
Frankly this is stupid. Bill was actually NOT attacking her. How weird to take a statement where he is refusing to attack her and turn it around as though he were attacking her. Its nonsensical.
People need to stop being so sensitive over every little thing and just get on with life.
Posted by: Anonymous at February 21, 2008 12:56 AM
To be real honest Bill should have been taken off the air years ago. in an effort to keep americans focused on whats important like the fact that citys in florida cant have christmas trees in the city halls (OMG) and off things like a silly war in the east, Bill has been a valiant warrior for the cause of smoke and mirrors, for this we applaude hei (now pull the plug)
Posted by: Dan at February 21, 2008 2:44 AM
Yumi? from Columbia Heights? lol aint this funny.
Anyway, I don't understand how some people try to excuse this. Lynching isn't a general term referring to a certain act. It is specific act directed at a specific people derived from a specific event by a specific person which was used to terrorize a specific people en masse in order to psychologically control them and instill in them the belief that they are subordinates in their society!

I wonder how long it took Bill to mold that smile? I feel sorry for people with the last name Lynch. Such a vexing dilemma. I may vote for Obama, but I'm still thinking about writing in Gus Hall. (Google to the rescue for some of you, no doubt)

How can all you people immediately chastise a man for exercising his constitutional right to free speech. Are you psychic? Do you know for a fact that if Mrs. Obama was completely Caucasian and not "mixed" that he would have used a different verb? Sure O'Reily is an idiot, but not because of this. You who bash him for this particular reason alone are the most racist, biggoted people in America. O'Reilly is actually a better person than all of you who are complaining right now. When racial issues are regulated that is when racism runs rampant. Big-ups to "Anonymous" for thinking for himself.

To the know it all Micah: the term "lynch" reads as such: ''(of a mob) to take the law into its own hands and kill (someone) in punishment for a real or presumed crime [after Col. Charles Lynch 1736-96]''. Webster's Dictionary and Thesaaurus, 1992.
Fucking Tyrant.

I would shut up and let him, then.
And Hoffman is using a dig on Hillary to prove he's not the PC Patrol? All that (and this) suggests is that he's an Obama follower. Cut his blog!

Referring to MediaMatters as a reliable source is hilarious!
Did any of you actually listen to the show? I did.
Here's a quote from an article in the ultra-liberal LA Times defending him:
What's even more interesting, however, are the O'Reilly words that came after that. This caller, O'Reilly referred to her as Maryanne from Woodbury, Conn., said she has a friend who allegedly had direct knowledge of Michelle Obama who reportedly called Obama "very angry" and a "militant woman" and...
But O'Reilly cut her off. No, really. He wouldn't let her continue. And this is what he said: "I want you to stay on the line. ... Because it's not fair to Michelle Obama for you ... because we don't know who you are, and we don't know who your friend is, but we want to know. We want to know, OK.
"But it's not fair at this point for you to say, 'My friend said X and Y,' because we just don't know. But if you would give us your information, we would like to talk to your friend. And then whatever your friend tells us, we'll track it down. We'll do it in a fair and balanced and methodical way."
Later O'Reilly added, "If indeed Michelle Obama is angry about something, if she has a history, we would like to know that, and then we can put it into some kind of context so that we can be fair to everybody."
Idiots....

Recently in the celebration of Black History Month, President Bush talked about the history of the term lynching and why it has no place in our vocabulary especially relating to black people. I must say that I am not a supporter of Bush, but in this case I certainly respect what he said. Imus, who had no reason to say what he did, lost his job with MSNBC and CBS for his absurd remark. Bill Orally needs to be gone as of now even though he makes buckos for Fox. Imagine if he didn't have the impact he does on Fox, he would have been dismissed immediately.

When did they start patrols(PC Patrol)for my personal computer? I'm so lost right now...
Posted by: Helm Matthews at February 21, 2008 12:45 PM
I understand where the term "Lynch Mob" came from. I was indeed a history major in college. However, the choice of the word "lynch" when referring to a Black person is a bad choice...period. We can not...CAN NOT be a country of people who tolerate such "Freudian slips". Not if we are to move forward. It doesn't matter how he meant it. The young lady on the Golf Network didn't mean any harm either. Yet somehow it was still offensive. Just like a lot of people attacked Mrs. Obama for saying for the first time in her adult life she was REALLY proud of her country. Some people knew exactly what she meant, understood and feel exactly the same way. While others were outraged. Was it some of you? Free speech is free speech is free speech.
And Annonymous...ALL of you...why are you ashamed of your identities. If you're gonna insult the intelligence of other posters, AT LEAST post your name so we'll know who's calling the other posters (free speech) idiots...

There is a recent publication about German words which have become sort-of inappropriate, due to their connotation from Nazi-era. The publication of these led to quite a discussion of whether or not a fear of political repercussion should lead to the banning of a word.
Lynch is a good example. It was not created to describe the specific persecution of blacks in the US. Yes, we should continue to use that term to describe it. But the slaves and African-Americans should not have a monopoly on the term.
I've used the term before, in probably the sense O'Reilley did, simply to refer to a lynch-mob. I've never considered it to be a racially charged term. I refuse to consider it to be so now. Just because some Dork (named O'Reilly) has justifiably pissed off so many people, we shouldn't grant him any political clout by letting him drive our lanugage.
I'm far more offended by the fact that the media consistently refers to Michelle Obama and Hilary Clinton as "Mrs."
Posted by: Elizabeth T. at February 21, 2008 10:12 PM
We should give the FCC more power so that it can shut down anyone on TV whom the masses (or the government I suppose) deem offensive, that'll show Fox.
Posted by: UhOh at February 22, 2008 9:23 AM
Oh, this is just absurd. By using the words "lynching party", O'Reilly makes reference to the "mass-mob-justice" mentality" or "street-justice" mentality. O'Reilly clearly condemns such mentalities, and prefers to address concerns with hard facts. He doesn't need to apologize, especially if the one demanding apology is a Jesse Jackson or an Al Sharpton - - - two vermin who daily prove conclusively that there are n*****s, and then there are black people.

As long as people keep crying about words using in a certain context (whether you're black, jewish or whatever), you're just going to bore anyone who isn't a total moron. Grow up.
Posted by: jm4847 at February 24, 2008 1:08 AM
Bill, your comments calling prominent African Americans the N-word is outrageous. You should be banned and not aloud to post vicious and inciting comments that have the potential to enrage spark controversy. This speaks volumes for your character and integrity. Now what was your reason for calling them the N-word on the sly? O'Reily was wrong and you can't say anything to cover for such nonsense. You are beneath everyone on this board right now... How could you stoop so low?
