Hillary's fake outrage at "pimped out" Chelsea

• How can anyone expect that idiot to stand up to the rigors of presidency if she tears up again over this. I will never understand the illogic of many women and all socialists. Put those two together and a dangerous combination have we.

• What's funny is that Hillary making such a big dust up over this causes a simple web search for pimp to come back with news articles of her daughter...

• You are so right. David's remark was marginally offensive at worst. His point was valid. Anybody with two brain cells to rub together knew what he meant. This is just more Clinton opportunism. Political discussion is supposed to be opinionated and full of colorful language. Moreover Schuster was not doing a straight news show but an opinion program. Maybe Hillary could find an issue that really matters to the American people to spend her time on.

• I agree that "pimped out" has lost its offensive sexual connotation. I googled the term. One hit was a commercial message that an electonics company had "pimped out" a piece of consumer equipment. The term is in the accepted vocabulary like other terms (e.g. "lead in your pencil," "pissed," "money shot," etc.) that were once quite offensive but are now accepted even if many still find them coarse.

• Everytime I hear Hilary defend her family, I think of how I had to tell my daughter at a very young age to turn off the television if she sees or hears the Presidents name! The President was Bill Clinton! Who would of ever thought the President would come into my home through the television and be apart of such a scandal as well as out right lie on the screen. Is this what we want for "our" daughters again! My daughter is now 23years old! I hope I don't have to turn the television off again!

• I think its obvious that the Clinton camp has blown Shuster's comment way out of proportion. They are spinning his comment, making themselves look like victims, and playing on the ignorance of the general public (or at least anyone over the age of 40 who may have taken the comment at face value). It may have been a poor decision for Shuster to incorporate slang in his commentary, but this is ridiculous. He simply said that Chelsea was "being pimped out", instead of saying she had been "using her personal contacts to assist her mother's political agenda". No one would have argued the latter statement. • The Bush Twins were pimped out by their mother, Laura Bush, and forced to hustle money during their father's campaign. The five Romney sons were pimped out by their mother, as well, forced to hustle money for their father. Welcome to the United States of Pimps.

• The words "pimping out", though offensive, perfectly describe what the Clintons are doing. It, in fact, describes their entire political existence. They will do or say whatever is needed to boost their poll numbers and get them farther along the road to the White House. The anger, I 100% agree, is a yet another ploy on Hillary's part to garner symapthy/poll numbers. I'm not saying she's wrong to exploit it in this way and I'm not saying that trotting out a recognizable figure to talk to influential people is wrong or bad; it is what it is. Oh, I forgot, Bill's not reall sure what the meaning of the word "is" is.

• Sure, it was a very poor choice of phrasing. Offensive, boorish, etc. are all valid comments. Is this what we have to endure when Hillary gets into power? I am already tired and bored with her paranoia and seething anger toward other groups of Americans. I see that she thrives on vilifying conservatives, and also the media that dares cast a negative light on her or her family.

• Let's see whether I have this right. Chelsea Clinton has subjected to the adulterous behavior of a father beginning in grade school through her White House years. A man who had no problem returning home and sleeping with her mother thereby placing her in danger of contracting all kinds of diseases, some of which could have been life threatening. Hillary Clinton, who should, I think, been more of role model for her, put up with him. Being in love does not support Hillary Clinton's tolerance. It has to do with a quest for power and money. I am not saying Shuster's comments were proper. Nobody can support what he said. I am certainly not a fan of him. And, for the record I detest Chris Matthews. The person repulses me. What I am saying is that Hillary Clinton is as fake as they come. I don't think anyone would think Bill Clinton a role model for his daughter. He has taught her how a man should not treat women. Especially, her mother. I don't think Shuster's comments will have the effect on Chelsea that a lifetime of hatred to women shown by her father. Shuster's hurt only lasts for a moment and she can move on. But, she will never be able overcome completely the antics of both her father and mother. She never deserved what Shuster said about her and she never deserved what her parents have put her through. As children, we are born of those who bring us into world.

• Hilary Clinton clearly (from the comments on this post) continues to be one of the most divisive figures in the campaign (and possibly politics) today -- people leap to indict or defend her at the drop of a poorly chosen phrase. I liked Bill when he was in office, but, frankly, I'm ready for a new first family.

• Sorry, to use the phrase "pimped out" in any context to describe a young woman is sexist and derogatory. The punishment fit the crime. I do wish the Clinton-haters would open their closed minds and listen to what Hillary has to say. They might be surprised to learn that they agree with much of it. Too bad their hatred of the messenger precludes them from hearing the message.

• I really don't like the Clinton's but you Clinton haters are a bit much. Chelsea is a grown woman who is probably helping her mom because she wants to ... big deal. • It's a good analogy. Chelsea was off limits to the press growing up. December 2007, Chelsea told a 9 year older reporter she didn't talk to the press. After several close primaries, Chelsea was suddenly put out on the campaign trail. Hillary wants into the White House at all costs. Hillary cries and gets the sympathy vote while bad boy Bill attacks so Hillary can distance herself from the fallout. Chelsea is being shipped around the country to stump for mom. Where are Barack's kids? On Super Tuesday, Barack said his kids were playing and that the spotlight wasn't their thing. Barack respects his kids. He doesn't even force them in front of the camera for the obligatory family photo op'. Have to respect Obama and wonder about Hillary's ambitions.

• Chelsea Clinton's phone calls to superdelegates puts her in a league far beyond the Bush daughters, the Romney kids, and Kate Edwards. She has taken center stage after her father's work on Senator Clinton's campaign became a liability after South Carolina. While it may not seem to matter to certain folks above (like Susan and wvc - who can't see past the word "pimp" to see Shuster's motivations for using the term) Shuster's intent in using the term should be the most important thing in this discussion. Calling this author's comments "vile" and "disgusting" and calling for him to be fired...well, those comments are just too ridiculous to be replied to.

What do you know about Shuster aside from this comment? Do you know how many times Shuster has used the phrase, in regards to whom, and in what context? Has he used the phrase in public 15 times and only in reference to women? 10 times referring to women and 5 to men? 10 to men and 5 to women? 14 to men and 1 to a woman? If you're basing your judgment of Shuster on this ONE comment, that's quite unfair and ludicrous from an empirical standpoint. Likely you've seen him or heard of other comments of his that you haven't deemed sexist, hence you're left with this ONE comment to deem him as sexist. Or maybe you are familair with his work and words and can point to other examples of his putative sexism. But if you're basing your judgment on ONE instance, I ask: Do you think you should be judged based on ONE comment you've made in order to define your character? Given that there is a non-sexist use of the label in the present idiom, it doesn't necessarily reveal his sexism, conscious or not. It reveals his familiarity with the phrase. He might be, and might have been being, sexist, but ONE instance doesn't give you enough information to assess him, let alone in terms of an INGRAINED sexism. Your willingness to pigeon-hole someone as meeting the stereotype you have of what it means to be sexist is just as prejudiced as sexism itself. If any news commentator made a remark like this regarding anyone in my family, be it an adult or child, I'd be sure his punishment was swift and severe. • Thank you for this article. Chelsea went so far as to call the girls of The View with the line - I'm proud of my mommy, would you please vote for her? She wants to be on the front lines, but she won't take questions from reporters, even 10 year old elementary school reporters. Billary is displeased with her MSNBC coverage and this is her way of striking back. Plus, she knows that she does better when she's a victim/crying/whining, etc.

Not only is the remark sexist, it is yet another example of the existing bias against Senator Clinton in the media--many of the other candidates' children have aided in their parents campaigns (including Senator Edwards' daughter), but nobody has questioned the actions of those candidates. Why shouldn't Chelsea campaign for her mother? The media is walking on eggshells around the question of race, falling over each other to be politically correct and avoid any "hot-button" words or phrases that could possibly come across as racially insensitive. They should be held just as accountable when it comes to the question of gender.

• I cannot agree with you more. The term "pimped out" to anyone familiar with American slang has morphed its original meaning and no longer has the sexual connotation it once had. Frankly, the people who don't understand this are the people who are up in arms. Unfortunately, this entire incident revolves 100% around people not understanding how the phrase "pimped out" is used by younger people. On another note, Chelsea Clinton is a very public arm of the Clinton campaign and as such is subject to the same public criticism as her mother. If Senator Clinton wants to shield her daughter from criticism, she should tell Chelsea to stay home. I hesitate to say that David Shuster chose the wrong words because, to anyone younger than 45, the meaning of his comments were clear and unoffensive. However, maybe he should steer clear of slang (1) in order to elevate the level of his political commentary and (2) to avoid confusion.
