What did Neville Chamberlain do? The meaning of appeasement

"You keep using this word," Inigo Montoya says in the Princess Bride. "I do not think it means what you think it means."

Right-wing pundits use the word "appeasement" with regularity, and at least one -- talk show yakker Kevin James -- objectively doesn't know. In an appearance on Chris Matthews' Hardball show, James tried to equate Barack Obama's plan to open diplomatic channels with Iran to Neville Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler.

Trouble is, he didn't know what Chamberlain actually did, as this painful video and transcript make clear.

Chris Matthews is often objectionable himself, but he hits the absolutely correct distinction here. Talking to the enemy? Not appeasement. Giving them half of Czechoslovakia? Appeasement.

Plenty of lessons to be had here. That's one of them. The other is this: if you're going to call somebody out for doing the "exact same thing" as a historical figure, maybe hit Wikipedia to find out what that historical figure did first.

Appeasement? How about paying Red China for damage when our aircraft collide in April 2001? How about giving the Taliban $40 million in aide in 2001? How about giving the Bin Laden family clearance to leave the country while the rest of us were grounded after 9-11? How about Bush-Clinton-Bush giving Red China most favored trading status and selling out American workers after Tianamen Square? Every one of your flag lapels are made in China or Viet Nam. Patriotism stops at the wallet in this country.

I also think it's a prime example of the modern rule that if you compare anybody other than Hitler to the Nazis in a political debate, you're going to get your ass handed to you.

Did any of you even notice at the end of the interview when Chris Mathews corrected this guy and stated that the USS Cole attack did't happen under Clinton it happened under Bush?
Granted the guy being interviewed was dead behind the eyes, but he didn't know something that happened 80 years ago. Mathews got his facts completely wrong on something that happened only 8 years ago (Oct. 12th 2000). Mathews showed his true colors.

This exposes exactly why the NeoCons will not talk to those they do not agree with. They do not care about truth and are too stupid to come up with coherent lies.

Can you imagine what Bush would have to say if asked why he is giving Israel billions a year so they can have nuclear weapons while he will not even allow others to generate electricity?

Bush would get that idiotic smirk on his face that he does when a reporter asks an intelligent question and start babbling like this Kevin James.

I have been reading in the blogsphere about this one and noticed many (who I would assume are big advocates of the level of understanding of Kevin James who tried to point out that was Chris Matthews did was worse - when he stated “Wasn’t the USS Cole in 2000 under Bush - I don’t even know what we’re talking about here?” I went back and listened and have to say it is almost inconceivable that Chris Matthews wasn’t joking on this point or being disingenous about, i.e. injecting into the conversation volutarily something erroneous and adding “I don’t even know what we’re talking about,” when it wasn’t even asked of him. I think this was actually another pint shot at Mr. James and not an admission by Matthews that he actually doesn’t know when the USS Cole was bombed or that he believed it was done under Bush’s admin.

I concur with Mr. Doogood, Chris Matthews was being facetious about the USS Cole. But, if Kevin is any indication of the thought process of the typical conservative, he didn't recognize it.

Sure, this idiot Kevin James is a loudmouth idiot typical of the right wing. But can you image what moronic garbage the people who listen to him must be?
Just how retarded must one be to vote Republican?

I watched the show and it was hillarious and sad at the same time. To think that this moron, Kevin James, and others like him have a following accounts for the moronic plague we have witnessed in our politics and government.

Chamberlain referred to his appeasement policy long before he gave away the Sudetenland.

Posted by: Ummmm at May 17, 2008 9:59 PM

Ummmmmm,

Chamberlain actually referred to his own policy as appeasement and did so before the Munich accords. That is very interesting news to me - but as Harry Truman would quote Mark Twain, the only thing new in the world is the history you don't know - HOWEVER I am sure you realize that when people refere to the appeasement of Hitler by Chamberlian this is EXACTLY what they are speaking of so what is you point really?

Hilarious. This clown - Kevin James, is a typical conservative idiot AM radio hate-jock. All riled up with self-righteous indignation and bumper sticker phrases, but is an absolute loudmouth moron. Tweety made him look like a fool in one of the most embarrassing moments I've ever seen on TV. It was painful and pitiful.

Hey - wanna hear about "appeasement" how 'bout giving arms to terrorists like Saint Ronnie did???? That's "appeasement"!
