'Mats '06

Here's a new picture of the Replacements and Josh Freese (thanks to 'Mats' fan John Wolf for the link). Brothers got together at Ed Ackerson's studio recently to record a new tune for the forthcoming 'Mats box set, which has been delayed for who knows why. Maybe my liner notes for All Shook Down sucked too much.

The idea of this makes me so damn giddy that I can't even work, think, do anything but daydream and grin.

Whaa??? p.s. Where's Slim?

Posted by: Martin at March 28, 2006 12:03 PM

bababbbbbbabbabb??? wha--???

Posted by: Brianna at March 28, 2006 12:08 PM

I'm so happy to hear this news that I don't even care that I am annoying and have no friends. I'm a brilliant photographer and literary genius so maybe they'll let me do the liner notes.

Posted by: Phenobarbiewench at March 28, 2006 12:38 PM

Awesome news! I just keep repeating the words "new Mats tune" over and over again and grinning.

Posted by: Zook at March 28, 2006 12:40 PM

What kind of Replacement's song requires two drummers?

Posted by: GG at March 28, 2006 2:03 PM

Josh Freese...what does Chris play? Lead? Cue "Hootenany"...

Posted by: Ray at March 28, 2006 2:31 PM

Watch out....April Fools Day is coming soon.

Posted by: Nuts at March 28, 2006 4:27 PM

Oh my god!

Posted by: Sonia at March 28, 2006 4:56 PM

Does this mean they'll be taking over their old booth at the CC Club? I'll go get the cushions warm...

Posted by: Brady at March 28, 2006 10:47 PM

word is they recorded two songs for not the reissues, but for a best-of comp that spans the entire 13-year itch that comes out on rhino in may. title: "Don't You Know Who I think I Was?"

if "go" isn't on it, I Will Weep.

Posted by: jim walsh at March 29, 2006 6:52 AM

so is that the tentative name of the new song? or the best of comp?

Posted by: jodi at March 29, 2006 8:18 AM

Buddyhead.com said that Freese played drums on the tracks, and Mars didn't appear at all, except for this picture.

Posted by: Nate at March 29, 2006 8:35 AM

the comp.

Posted by: jim walsh at March 29, 2006 9:07 AM

Big, fat plus 1 on "GO." That's a song so good it even has it's own smell.

Posted by: wallace at March 29, 2006 9:27 AM

Well that is just enough to make me pee on myself! I hope this works out, but I too have to ask where is Slim?

Posted by: Miss Donna at March 29, 2006 9:44 AM

As in A Perfect Circle Josh Freese? That's crazy.

Posted by: taylor at March 29, 2006 10:55 AM

the photo is old news and has been circulating on the web for weeks creating lots of unfounded rumors.

the guys got together to help tommy with some soundtrack stuff months ago. there is a box set coming out in may and a possible "best of" to follow that. both from the twin tone years. no new songs are pegged for either realease.

so unfortunately, there has been no reunion and no "new" mat's album is on the way. we can only wish!

Posted by: bob at March 29, 2006 11:36 AM

This would be the best news ever if they were getting back together. (Fingers crossed).

Posted by: Reege at March 29, 2006 12:13 PM

snakes on a plane!

Posted by: brian at March 29, 2006 12:32 PM

what?? was slim too busy?? maybe with two drummers theyre doing grateful dead and adam and the ants covers.

Posted by: jay at March 29, 2006 1:01 PM

I find it hard to believe that Chris Mars would appear for anything musically related unless it was 'Mats related.

Whether they recorded new material for any 'Mats re-issues, best of comp, box set, etc. will probably remain in speculation until such issues are officially announced and/or released.

Where's Slim? Maybe he was the guy snapping the picture?

Posted by: Max at March 29, 2006 1:02 PM

Josh Freese has been in the Vandals for, like, the last 10-15 years too.

Posted by: Brad1975 at March 29, 2006 2:06 PM

the same Josh Freese who played on Eventually, 14 Songs, Suicaine, and toured the entire 1996 Tour with Paul.

Go is the worst song on Stink
there is such a thing as continuity

Posted by: unpopular contrarian at March 29, 2006 6:46 PM

i'd say the fact that they have song titles confirmed and that Billboard is a reputable source that it's pretty much true ;)

Posted by: solace at March 29, 2006 8:12 PM

Ever consider the fact that there's someone out there whose favorite Replacements song is "Mr. Whirly"?

"Freese drummed on the sessions, and Mars sang backup." WHY? Why couldn't mars drum?!?!?!?!?

Posted by: great news but... at March 30, 2006 3:48 PM

maybe if he could have drummed with paint brushes instead... ;)

Posted by: solace at March 30, 2006 5:35 PM

totally agree on the "Go" sentiments.
Man - that tune made me realize what an amazing bass player Tommy was at such a young age...
The bass lines on that tune are what really make the damned thing killer.

Posted by: sidemouse at March 30, 2006 6:43 PM

ok, you guys. where were you when i wrote this a few months ago?

http://blogs.citypages.com/jwalsh/2005/12/index.asp

it was obtuse and sorta lame to have to couch it like that, but i was bummed/surprised none of the hardcorists picked up on it. (scroll down to the "Hmmm... I wonder what a new song by THESE GUYS would sound like" bit). anyway, nice to see all y'all here. thanks...

Posted by: jim walsh at March 30, 2006 8:51 PM

That was one sly move...!

Posted by: sparky at March 31, 2006 1:06 AM

I never get invited to those kinds of parties. I hang with the burners at the back of abandoned parking lots drinking and listening to the car tape deck. Wish we had/a joint so bad....

Posted by: wallace at March 31, 2006 9:43 AM

I know hindsight is 20/20, but I did pick up on that hint... but quickly was reminded of the New Year's Eve reunion show in 2001. har! As someone once said, fool me once, shame on, ummm, shame on you. Fool me, ummmm, you can't get fooled again!

Posted by: Wolfdog at March 31, 2006 11:14 AM

"Go," by all means. Might have been the song that threw the Peter Davis-type thrashers off the trail for good.

Continuity? Please.

I trust Paul retains teeth; the photo is inconclusive.

This all should be fun!

Posted by: JG at April 1, 2006 4:56 AM

Might .. it .. be .. possible .. that Paul could find some kind of dentist to help him out?!? Wouldn't Rhino pay for that, perhaps?!? Orthodontia ain't the devil, babaayy!
