Harry Potter Protest
Like every other bookstore on the planet, the Minneapolis Uptown Borders will be celebrating the release of the
new Harry Potter book tonight at midnight. Frankly the specter of spending the pre-bar-closing hours with a bunch of neurotic, sleep-deprived parents and cranky, sleep-deprived kids dressed in cloaks and pointy hats is enough to keep me far, far away.
However, I will take this opportunity to once again point out that Borders is refusing to negotiate in good faith with its employees in Minneapolis and Ann Arbor. The two stores voted overwhelmingly last year to unionize, but contract talks have gone nowhere. Among other things, Borders refuses to pay its employees a living wage of $9.33 an hour.
Protesters will be on hand tonight at the Harry gathering to remind revelers that the bookstore doesn't treat its employees with decency. For more details on the protest, see the latest
press release from United Food and Commercial Workers Local 789, the union representing Uptown Borders employees. For my previous posts on this topic go
