"Dark Star"--my article about Brother Ali--is live at City Pages. Don't miss the online extras: two new mp3s, a video gallery, a photo gallery, and rare audio of Brother Ali's 2004 radio spots for Marshall Field's. Below is a selection of Ali links, including previous articles about Ali and Rhymesayers. (Above: Ali at the Hip-Hop Congress in Moorhead, Minnesota, February 17, 2007. Below: Meeting KRS-One in 1990 [photo courtesy of Nick Newman]; with Eyedea, Felipe, and Slug at the Triple Rock in 2004--click for larger image [photo by Tony Nelson].)
Note: The print version of the article contains an error: It correctly paraphrases Ali saying one of his releases "was funded by a friend who was beaten by Minneapolis police and settled out of court," but the release in question was 2000's Rites of Passage, not 2003's Shadows on the Sun. A correction will run in City Pages April 18.

Ali is King Of The Underground. The disappointing thing about this City Pages article on Brother Ali is that it starts off with - "A year from now, he might have a limo, or a cab stipend charged to Warner Music Group." I think this Pete Scholtes is missing the point completely and it's obvious this guy doesn't understand a thing about underground music. Any of the artists on Rhymesayers could be on a major selling tons of albums driving around in a beamer with lots of bling around their necks. Ali will never ride in a limo, period. Slug (Sean) of Atmosphere is probably the biggest "star" of all underground rap artists in the country and does he ride around in a limo? Of course not. Underground hip hop is about all the OTHER stuff in life besides bling and fast cars and drugs and guns. It's about connecting people to a feeling. It's similar to the old days when Indian tribes would pass on tradition by word-of-mouth. Lessons about Ali's life and his feelings at the current moment in time are being passed on in his music. Don't get it twisted.
