Delusional jackasses successfully woo MLS franchise

Philadelphia will be joining Major League Soccer in 2010. An anouncement is slated for next week. This is great news for the Sons of Ben, the not-yet-existent team's supporters group that basically willed the franchise into existence. The Guardian's Steven Wells has a hilarious little piece on their jackassery.

Paul...if you wrote about it, I missed it. What do you think about the new owners of the Thunder? Legit? Will we have MLS in the TC anytime soon? If/when we do...what are the prospects with more than 400k Latinos in MN?

The new ownership group is definitely a positive for the Thunder. The team's player budget has already increased substantially, as evidenced by signings such as Luchi Gonzalez and Stephen deRoux. Plans for a soccer specific stadium is also a much-needed development.

But the proof will be in the results. Little is known about the principal owners, Dean Johnson and Henk Habers.

I think MLS is a long-shot. The league is very cautious about expansion. There are many markets primed for a team. St. Louis and a second New York franchise would seem the most likely targets.

In addition, Minneapolis-St. Paul is a pretty saturated sports market. We have teams in every major sports league, many minor league franchises (swarm, saints, thunder) and division I college sports. That's a lot of tickets to sell already. And the thunder's shoddy attendance in recent years doesn't look like a positive omen.
