Carlos Gomez Hits For The Cycle

The Twins have been earning their way onto SportsCenter the last few days, in what is fast becoming a headline-heavy week for the club.

Just a night after getting no-hit for 8 1/3 by White Sox pitcher Gavin Floyd, the Twins followed up that sad display by stomping the Sox 13-1 in a game delayed nearly two hours by rain. The team now leads the Central Division by 1.5 games over Cleveland.

The last time a Twin hit for the cycle came compliments of Kirby Puckett, who accomplished the feat against the Oakland A's on August 1, 1986. Carlos Gomez was just 8 months old.

And Gomez' magnetic traits of youth were widely on display Wednesday night as the young center fielder went 4-6, raising his average 21 points, from .261 to .282.

Gomez homered to lead off the game against Sox starter Mark Buehrle, tripled against Buehrle in the fifth, doubled in the sixth, and then singled off of Sox reliever Ehren Wasserman in the ninth. The single, completing this "inverse cycle," ricocheted off of the pitcher's glove, and Gomez beat out an infield throw by shortstop Alexei Ramirez to assure the feat. Camera angles showing Gomez' sprint down the first base line also readily captured an electric Twins dugout.

Gomez then flashed a beaming smile as he made his way around the bases, scoring his second run of the night. Arriving back at the Twins dugout, he was mobbed by teammates and seemingly shared joyous battle tales with pitcher Livan Hernandez, whom it should be noted tossed a complete game, improving his record to 5-1 on the year.

Gomez cycle was the eighth in Twins history. The box score can be seen here.

nice to see a young player doing well for the Twins. Hopefully ownership can afford him for a few years.

He's an exciting player. Too bad I missed his cycle- Between the rain delay and the Ny-Quil I was KO'd. Thanks for the recap

This kid is funny - one day, he is sat for not looking like he has ever played a game in his life from starting the next game and looking like a complete superstar! What polar opposites...hopefully with time, he will start to even out these ebbs and flows of complete brilliance and complete cluelessness...over time comes wisdom...right?

Way to go Livan! Keep hogging innings, you rubber arm, you...

That was quite the thrill!! Did everyone think he was safe? Do you think the umpires were influenced at all by the idea of completing the cycle?

Ryan- Expect that polarity throughout the season. At 22, Gomez is a young dude and young fellas are wont to do some crazy shit on occasion to give headaches to their respective bosses, parents, and in this case- managers. Don't be surprised to see this rollercoaster climb and descend all year long. But it's already proven to be a damn fine ride.

Danny- I don't think the umps would be influenced by the accomplishment. Still- it seems like this has been a conversation I've had readily over the past two days. Sometimes, I think, the fan wants something to happen so bad, that our focus and energy become really finite, and all facets of the game (field, weahter, umps, opposition) suddenly become a factor. Just another of the beauties of baseball. I will say, however, that any ump- behine home plate or in the field of play- is downright lying if they cliam to be unaware of a pitching feat come the last few outs of a game. It's always interesting, as we witnessed this week, to see the scope of the strike zone come, say, the 9th inning of a No-No.

Maybe on a slow news day, you can write up a little glossary: no-no's? Cycles? umps? (just kidding)

Katherine- A glossary is a sound idea for those readers- perhaps like yourself- that are new to baseball. Perhaps you'd enjoy the previous entry, "Baseball 101: Carlos Gomez and the Bunt," which focuses on some baseball fundamentals. I'll likely be tossing in another few such entries covering some hardball basics over the course of the season.
