Floyd's Near No-No

25 year-old Gavin Floyd, whom the Twins defeated just eight days ago, survived some early control issues and a 4th inning unearned run before deftly settling in for the night, and rolling through the hot Twins lineup with a series of well-spotted fastballs and knee-locking breaking pitches. He worked fast, seemingly ready to deliver fresh pitches mere seconds after receiving the ball back from catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

Vying to become the 17th White Sox to toss a no-hitter, Floyd retired 16 Twins in a row at one point. Fox Sports' cameras focused on him often in the late-innings, showing the mop-topped righty with seemingly little stress on his face as his teammates let him be, alone on the bench.

Mauer, who also walked twice, laced his opposite field double to left center, past diving CF Nick Swisher. Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen then removed Floyd from the game allowing the pitcher a hefty standing roar from the announced Chicago crowd of 23,480. Bobby Jenks finished off the 7-1 Sox victory, recording the last two outs.

Floyd walked 3 Twins, and accrued 4 strikeouts.

good coverage of the Twins by Spicer

Posted by: myles at May 7, 2008 8:19 AM

Don't know much about baseball, but I like the way this Spicer guy writes. I've also never posted a comment on a blog so maybe this is my very own version of Spring Training.

Did Boof lose too much weight?

I was watching ESPN while they cut away in the 8th and 9th innings to show Floyd - you want a guy to throw a no-no, but not against your team...I was happy when Mauer laced that shot into Left center...sorry Floyd...interesting stat that I heard - last week Floyd had a no-no thru 7, last night thru 8 - the guy is on fire...does he throw one next week?

Your commentary keeps me coming back for more. Glad to see City Pages discovered your talent. Spicy and creative! This is a first time blog for me but well worth the effort. Thanks Spicer guy.

...obviously not a big Sox fan, but as a baseball fan you have to give credit where credit is due...well done Floyd!

Great Twins coverage and some seriously talented writing from Spicer. Thanks

as usual your writing is very timely and topical. loved it when mauer came through, and tell floyd to get a man's haircut.

I wonder if they call him "Pink" Floyd?

Posted by: Denny Terrio Guy at May 7, 2008 12:31 PM

Amazing that Cuddy and Morneau can leave 8 guys on base during "Pink" Floyd's no-hit bid...

...my question is...will Mauer ever hit one out of the Ballpark again?...just curious...

Posted by: Court Paper Guy at May 7, 2008 2:22 PM

Ok first of all Mauer is way too adorable for anyone to be picking on! With or without the "out of the park hits" he has been on fire!!!
Go Twins

Posted by: Sugpop at May 7, 2008 4:38 PM

Court Paper- Yeah, Mauer has been in a power outage, having not left the yard since Sept. 29th of 2007. But still, among MLB catchers with 100 at-bats, he's 2nd in batting (.337)and 3rd in OBS (.409). Furthermore, he's commited just a lone error and has allowed no passed balls in 27 games behind the plate. The home runs may never come with this guy- but personally, I'll take the strong OBP and stellar fielding over a little extra pop.

And yeah, Commenter Sugpop is right, in that the ladies do seem to find him "adorable." Just take a look at who's wearing those #7's next time you hit the Dome.

Which would you rather see, a no-hitter, the cycle, a triple play, a triple-double, a hat trick, a hole in one? Just asking

Posted by: mark cuban at May 7, 2008 9:11 PM

Great to see Mauer break up the no-no in the ninth after 8+ innings of the Twins getting themselves out while the strike zone that night was about the size of a toaster. Figures it would be one of the few guys in the line-up with a discerning eye for pitches to finally get a knock.

Mark Cuban- Your inquiry is both fun, and also timely as- gauging by the time stamp- the question was punched in a few hours before Carlos Gomez finished off his cycle.

That said: I'll take the no-hitter. Furthermore, should I ever have the opportunity to see a Perfect Game in person- I'll die happy.

Great question. I hope you buy the Cubs.
