Penn, nicknamed "The Prodigy," won the interim UFC lightweight belt, a title created after Sherk tested positive for steroids and had to serve out a suspension.
If Sherk needed any motivation for the fight, he need only read Penn's recent remarks:
I have been training a lot for this fight; more so than any fight in the past. I feel like I am ready now and could fight tomorrow if need be. Sean Sherk better watch out. It makes me mad. Sean Sherk's a cheater. In the wild west, when you get caught with an ace up your sleeve, you're dead. That's why I say that Sean Sherk is dead. You can't confuse steroids for heart.
Of course, Penn had reason to be upset after Sherk claimed that he'd seen the Prodigy give up in a previous fight with former welterweight champion Matt Hughes.
BJ, I've seen him broken. In the second fight with Hughes when he was caught on his back and eating those punches and elbows he was just flopping around like a fish out of water. That was a guy that didn't want to fight anymore. I've seen that in a couple of fights where if the fight is not going his way he kind of just says, `F_k it. I don't really care.' You can see it in someone's face.
If this is the first time you're hearing about Sherk, check out our feature profile as well as this awesome slideshow.

Penn is not the interim champ,He is the lightweight champ. Sherk was stripped of his title when the suspension came down.

True enough, but it's clear that Sherk still regards it as an interim belt, at least. One thing is certain: This fight will leave one undisputed lightweight champion.

What Z said.
The first two paragraphs of this column are completely false and so blatantly biased it's a total joke. BJ Penn is the lightweight champ.
If Sherk is pissed at BJ for talking so much smack, he shouldn't have cheated in the first place. And it's funny how Sherk saying he's seen BJ "broken" is basically just repeating what BJ said about Sherk. Couldn't come up with anything original on your own, Sean?
