Our local place to play the ponies is hosting special Belmont Stakes betting in honor of Big Brown, who has a chance to make history by becoming the first horse in 30 years to win the Triple Crown.
Betting Big Brown is a tricky proposition. The galloping UPS ad is expected to go off at 1-5 odds, meaning you'd have to risk $5 to win $1. That means that the only bets worth making are exactas, trifectas, and the like.
The Belmont Stakes begin at 5:25 p.m., so get your bets in early.
For neophyte gamblers, here's a guide for what to say at the window.
If you're looking for a good exacta pairing, you could do worse than Denis of Cork.
Denis of Cork's trainer, transplanted Irishman David Carroll, knows every inch of Belmont Park. Carroll, 48, was the exercise rider for 1989 Belmont winner Easy Goer during a six-year stint under Shug McGaughey. Easy Goer derailed his archrival Sunday Silence's Triple Crown bid, but Carroll isn't predicting his colt can knock off Big Brown.
UPDATE 1: The field (prior to Casino Drive scratch):
1 Big Brown Desormeaux 2-5
2 Guadalcanal Castellano 50-1
3 Macho Again Gomez 20-1
4 Denis of Cork Albarado 12-1
5 Casino Drive Prado 7-2
6 Da' Tara Garcia 30-1
7 Tale of Ekati Coa 20-1
8 Anak Nakal Leparoux 30-1
9 Ready's Echo Velazquez 30-1
10 Icabad Crane Rose 20-1
UPDATE 2: Casino Drive, the Japanese horse considered Big Brown's chief rival, has hoof problems and has been scratched.
UPDATE 3: Gambling site is picking Denis of Cork 10-1 to spoil Triple Crown.
UPDATE 4: Anak Nakal: An intriguing horse.
