Wake Up and Smell the Obscure Pro Sport

Categories: Outdoors

Wakeboarding is an extreme sport with a rich history. Well, not so much rich, as short. I am older than the sport. California surfer Tony Finn invented the wakeboard, sort of a water ski and surfboard love child being pulled by a powerboat, in 1985. Since then it's evolved greatly (the introduction of foot straps presumably made it safer), and survived some lean years in mid-90s. The Pro Wakeboard Tour going strong with a TV deal with cable newcomer Fuel TV and five events this summer bringing together athletes from pretty much any country with coastline together to fly off jumps, weave through courses, and use some pretty funny terminology. Observe:

Butt Check: No, it's not making sure your bathing suit is sliding down your ass; it's when you come off a jump and you rear end touches the water. You lose lots of points for this.

Digger: Eating shit off a jump.

Hoochie Glide: They probably could have come up with a better name for this. It actually doesn't involve hoochies, sadly. It's a trick called a 'raley' (whatever that is) with a method grab, which is grabbing the board and pointing it in a particular direction.

Don't miss the chance to see a still fairly unknown sport and learn new and not very useful slang terms this weekend. The competition runs 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. both days, and tickets are $5 in advance and $10 the day of the event. Directions to park can be found here.
