Why the Vikings must obtain Brett Favre

Categories: Vikings

Here's what I'm thinking: The Vikings land Favre. After a shaky preseason for Tarvaris, Childress gives the Grizzled One the nod in the Monday Night opener in Green Bay. Favre completes 10-32 with no touchdowns and four interceptions as the team gets hammered, say by 27-3.

Favre gets a second chance in week 2 against the Colts. He completes 12-37, connecting on a shovel-pass to Adrian Peterson for a TD. He throws five INTs, loses two fumbles, and staggers off the field late in the fourth quarter with a mild concussion after holding onto the ball for too long as his receivers fail to get open downfield. I'm envisioning a final tally of something like 38-10.

Undoubtedly iffy, but we'd love to have Griffey

A fine comeback win for the boys last night, bringing us to within a half game of the White Sox, placing the Twins in a position to take over first in the Central for the first time since early May. But instead of lauding the win (or discussing Alexi Casilla's trip to the DL) today, I'll use this space to sample the MLB flavor of the week, and touch upon the July 31st trade deadline. So to wit:

Vikings' Quarterbacks: the American Ranking

Categories: Vikings
150px-Minnesota_Vikings_logo.svg.png
This year, the Vikings must choose, yet again, who will lead them into battle. Arm strength and durability are important issues. But this being an election year, we go ahead and place the QBs through a combine to find their American ranking. The test is a highly subjective form of judgment with little to no foundation in logic. So think of it like an album review on pitchfork.More >>

Nick "The Goat" Thompson battles the bar

nickgoat.jpeg
Last Saturday night, Nick Thompson lost his mixed martial arts fight on CBS. He lasted just 63 seconds against Jake Shields, one of the top middleweight fighters in the world. It was fast and disappointing for the University of Minnesota law student, who is also one of the top fighters around. But Thompson doesn’t have much time to mope around about the loss. He has to fly back from Stockton, CA, the site of the fight, and take the bar exam this week. Instead of worrying about elbows, he’ll have to endure essay questions on things like legal principles, trusts, wills and community property.More >>

Critical Mass

criticalmass.jpg
The city made some improvements and changes after they beat back critical mass cyclists last August. The one held last Friday was an overall positive affair. The cyclists made their way through downtown traffic without causing a riot. Sgt. Jeff Garcia from the Minneapolis Police Department complemented the effort. "It went pretty well," says Garcia. "Both sides are doing a good job."More >>

Sweat, Sox? Minnesota vs. Chicago series preview

Categories: MLB

The Cleveland series was easy to look past, considering both the historical notes attached to the previous games in New York, and of course the series that follows this week. Taking the last two from the Indians, combined with the White Sox' Sunday loss to Detroit, sets up a pivotal four days at the Dome. The Twins, now just 2.5 back of Ozzie and Co., have had perennially leveled battles with the White Sox in the Gardy era, as evidenced by the skipper's 61-62 career mark versus the South Siders since 2002 (40-45 since Guillen took over in '04). However, a four-day surge and sweep would put the Twins back in 1st place for the first time since May 13th, when we were 20-18. In the words of both Denny Hocking and Denny Hecker, it's nut-cutting time.

Leader of the Sacks

Categories: Vikings

Former Vikings defensive end and 2006 team sack leader Darrion Scott was sentenced yesterday for putting a plastic bag over his son's head. It's the same old story for Vikings sack machines. For the past five seasons, the Vikings' best sacker has been found to be, at some point in his career, in violation of NFL steroid or substance rules or the law. Here's a year-by-year sack leader misdeed round up.

The Hustle Behind the Muscle: A conversation with Perry Castellano, Twins Strength and Conditioning Coordinator

Categories: MLB

In recent weeks, I’ve been putting together a September piece on Twins Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Perry Castellano for the Gameday magazine sold outside the Dome before ballgames. Mr. Castellano has held this post since last season, after working 5 years as the club’s Minor League Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. Concurrent to our Gameday interview, Mr. Castellano saw fit (my puns are terrible after a night of gin) to answer a few inquiries for this space as well. In addition, he’s provided herein the “In-Season Workouts for Twins Starting Pitchers.” To read a portion of our verbal workout, and to find out if you’re Slowey enough to exercise at an MLB-level, please continue onward:

Track bike to Trick Bike: the fixie evolution

fixie.jpg
Look, the humble fix-trick scene in our saintly twin cities still remains in its infancy. It’s nothing like San Francisco, or even Milwaukee. So to help take it to another level, CP would like to direct riders to the video below. In it they will see riders who take fixed-gear trick riding up to level so high, one could reasonably assume the riding takes place on a mountain top in the Alps, where we assume hockey-skating bears and synchronized swimmers live harmoniously.More >>
