Baseball Tonight's "Tim Kurkjian" talks some Kubel with City Pages

• Pat- I understand your disorientation with the system, it's confusing. Basically, the pre-July 31st trade deadline involves transacting a player freely without trades being blocked by other teams. After that, a player has to pass through waivers, meaning that that, in inverse order of worst-to-best record, a team can place on claim on the player the team is attempting to trade. If that happens, the team can pull him off waivers, let the player go for no compensation, or make a new deal with the claiming team. In addition, players acquired after August 31st can't be on postseason rosters unless they replace an injured player. Hope that helps.

• UPDATE IN COMMENT FORM #2: Wrong on Randy. With the wealth of lefty starting pitching the Twins are set to oppose in the next week, the team instead parted ways with little-used Mike Lamb. Lamb was batting .233 (just .067 against left-handers) with only a single bomb on the season. As I understand, the Twins now have 10 days to trade or release him. • UPDATE IN COMMENT FORM: According to La Velle E Neal at the Trib, the Twins reacquired Eddie Guardado at about 2:30 today. In exchange, we sent the Rangers Mark "I got a lot of shit when I was a kid" Hamburger from our Elizabethon farm club. Eddie was with the Twins from 1993-2003, and is now 37. He's pitched with three teams in the last 3 years, although his 3.65 ERA in nearly 50 innings pitched this year is encouraging. Especially after continually watching Guerrier, Crain and the bullpen struggle to hold leads. I'm all for it. Sure, dude is older, but we all know what he's about. I'll never forget when he caught that ball off the speaker, back when that was still considered fair play at the Dome. I was at that game, and let my eyes drift off the field thinking the ball was just going into the stands, but that dude never gave up on it- made a sweet diving play. He's a hustler, a gamer with playoff experience. And while we may now have 3 lefties in the pen, who gives a damn. Let's go with the best we've got.
